Oct. 31: The Halloween hockey game between North Country arch-rivals Clarkson and St. Lawrence at the Saints' Appleton Arena turned into a treat for all involved.
The two teams skated to a 2-2 draw in a game which was end-to-end from start to finish and did not include a single penalty. The last time that happened between the two rivals was a 1963 ECAC consolation game, won 7-5 by Clarkson in which the referees elected to not call any penalties. There might have been a couple of calls which could have been made in Friday's game well, but both coaches were pleased with the pace and level of play as well as the composure of their players.
"The refs decided not to call any penalties and that was just fine with me," said Saint coach
Greg Carvel after the game. "They let the guys play and the players on both sides responded with a nice clean game.
"That was a real good hockey game with two teams competing at a good pace. It was not always real pretty, and I thought we were a little sloppy at times in what we intended to do, but usually in a Clarkson game, you throw the game plans out the window anyway."
St. Lawrence will take a 3-3-1 record into Saturday's Potsdam rematch against the 2-3-2 Golden Knights. The Saints are still looking for their first win over the Knights since a 4-1 win in Lake Placid in 2011, but both teams came away satisfied after Friday's game.
Neither team scored in a hectic first period which featured end to end play but few scoring chances. The Saints broke the scoring ice at 16:33 of the second when junior
Brian Ward turned in front of Clarkson goalie Steve Perry and snuck a shot inside the post for his second of the year from
Christian Horn and
Drew Smolcynski.
The Saint lead lasted all of 25 seconds as Clarkson's Jeff DiNallo got behind the Saint defense and took a pass from Kelly Summers. While Hayton stopped DiNallo's first shot on the rebound, DiNallo poked his own rebound back into the net for his second of the year to tie it at 1-1. The Golden Knights then came out of the period with a 2-1 lead when senior Joe Zarbo scored unassisted, his shot from along the goal line glancing off a Saint stick and past Hayton with 54 seconds to go in the period.
Sophomore Woody Hudson tied the game for the Saints at 6:13 of the third when he stationed himself all alone in the slot and took a pass from
Justin Bruckel, burying his second of the year with
Sean McGovern also assisting to make it 2-2.
The Saints, who were outshot 26-15 through two periods, came on strong in the third, but could only get the one goal from Hudson. SLU did have a couple of great scoring chances foiled by Perry, just as Hayton denied the Knights at the other end of the rink. Defenseman James Howden made one big play in the final four minutes when he plucked a shot by Horn off the goal line before the puck could fully cross to keep it tied.
The rest belonged to the goaltenders as Perry made 13 of his 27 saves for Clarkson in the third period and overtime and Hayton finished with 34 stops, four of them in the five minute overtime.
