Saints Upend Another Top 10 Team, Beat Miami 5-4

Oct. 24: As Butch said to Sundance…"who are those guys???"

St. Lawrence University's young men's hockey team received goals from five different players, pushing the goal scoring list to 17 players in the first five games of the season and freshman goalie Kyle Hayden made 38 saves for his second straight win over a top ten team as the Saints held off the Redhawks 5-4 in Oxford, OH on Friday night.

SLU improves to 3-2 on the season heading into a Saturday night rematch while Miami is now 3-2 after the home loss in game one of the series.

"I'm very proud of the guys," Saint coach Greg Carvel told reporters. "That's a really good hockey team with a lot of high end skill. We'll have our hands full tomorrow with an angry team, but if we play like we did in the first [period tonight], I like our chances."
The Saints couldn't have asked for a better start at Miami, scoring three times in the first period to grab a 3-0 lead and put themselves in a great position to control the flow of the game.

Sophomore Christian Horn, who transferred from Minnesota scored on his first Saint and collegiate shot to give the Saints a 1-0 lead on a power play just 32 seconds into the man advantage. Horn, who dressed for four games at Minnesota,  but never saw game action, made his first appearance in a Saint uniform after sitting out the first four games of the year and connected when he took Brian Ward's pass and whipped a shot past Miami goalie Jay Williams 1:53 into the game.

Senior Justin Bruckel, who saw action in just three games in his junior season, made it a 2-0 game when he scored his second career goal and first since November of 2012 from Sean McGovern 11:50 into play and defenseman Mike Graham scored his second career goal and first of the season at 16:29 to give the Saints the big early lead.

Ryan Lough made it a 4-0 game just 10 seconds after coming out of the penalty box as he scored his first collegiate goal from Gunnar Hughes as the Saints completed their second successful penalty kill of the game and their 21st in a row at 4:53 of the second period.

Miami got on the board with a shorthanded goal late in a Saint major power play as Blake Coleman scored his second of the year at 10:04 of the second and the Saints took a penalty on the scoring play, but the Saints got that one right  back when defenseman Eric Sweetman scored his first of the year in a four-on-four with Pat Doherty assisting at 10:14 for a 5-1 lead. The Redhawks snapped the Saint  penalty kill streak at 14:20 pf the second when Ben Paulides scored his third of the season on a power play to make it a 5-2 game.

Miami came charging back in the third, scoring two goals in a span of 14 seconds to make it a 5-4 game, but Hayton and the Saints were able to hold the Redhawks off the rest of the way to pick up the win.

Blake Coleman scored a power play goal at 12:32 of the third and Miami won the ensuing faceoff and scored again when Anthony Lewis scored at 12:46,  but Hayton and the Saint defense recovered quickly and did not allow further scoring.

Hayton finished with 38 saves for his second straight win over a top ten team while Williams made just 11 saves on 16 Saint shots.
