No. 6 Knights Shut Out Saints, Earn Season Sweep

Jenna Marks had a team-high four shots Saturday against Clarkson.
Box Score Jan 11: In the final regular-season meeting between the two rivals, No. 6 Clarkson shut out the St. Lawrence women's hockey team for the second straight night, earning a 3-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.

A back and forth battle through much of the first two frames, the game remained scoreless heading into the second intermission. After recording only four shots in the first period, the Saints (6-13-1, 5-4-1) outshot the Knights (16-4-2, 7-2-1) in the second 9-7 and looked to be carrying momentum into the third period.

"We put forth a solid effort for two periods today," said Saints Head Coach Chris Wells. "Clarkson was able to wear us down to get the win."

The Knights that finally broke through four minutes and eight seconds into the third when Olivia Howe put here team ahead 1-0, jumping on a rebound in the crease and lifting the puck over a sprawling Carmen MacDonald.

"Clarkson was able to use its depth real well this weekend," Wells added. "I haven't seen a team back check like they do all year."

The second Clarkson goal came 29 seconds into a power-play opportunity with just under two minutes remaining in regulation when Brittany Styner beat MacDonald with a blast from the top of the left circle. Coach Wells pulled his goaltender after Styner's tally to give the Saints an extra-attacker, but an empty net tally by Howe put the game out of reach with 1:50 to play.

MacDonald finished with 29 saves for the Saints, while Clarkson's Erica Howe recorded 15 stops.

The Saints will hit the road next weekend for a pair of ECAC Hockey contests against Brown and Yale.
