Prior to St. Lawrence
Mitchell ran cross country, outdoor track and played basketball. He was the captain of cross country and outdoor track teams, first-team all-league and finished second in the BCSL Divisional Championship Cross Country race. He qualified for the Group I cross country championships and recorded the third best time in New Egypt program history. He was a four year letter winner in track and set a school record with the 4x800 relay. He was first-team all-league in the 3,200, first in the BCSL 3,200 and second in the 1,600. A member of the National Honor Society, he was an honor roll student the student liaison to the board of education.
