Biography

2017-18: Playing as one of two veteran defensemen for the Saints as a senior, Purmal recorded three assists in his finals season with the Saints, including two in the team's 6-3 win over then-No. 5 Wisconsin on October 28..He was also named to the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team. 

2016-17: Purmal played 28 games on the blue line for St. Lawrence as a junior and scored a goal at UMass Lowell and added an assist for two points.

2015-16: Had an assist each night on opening weekend...Third on the team with 12 blocked shots in nine starts...Missed the Princeton and Quinnipiac games due to injury, but returned to action the following week and had his third assist of the year at Colgate...Had an assist in each game in the Colgate-Cornell home series...Played in 32 of 37 as a sophomore.

2014-15: Purmal saw action in 23 games for the Saints and had four goals and two assists, finishing the year at plus-10 in the plus/minus ratings...He sustained an injury in game two of the season at Niagara and missed six games, but returned to record his first collegiate point in a win at Brown...He scored his first collegiate goal against Princeton in a home win.

Prior to St. Lawrence
Matt was an assistant captain and the best defenseman award winner for the Green Bay Gamblers. He had two goals and two assists in 54 games for Green Bay and had prior junior hockey stints for Wichita Falls in the NAHL and Fort McMurray in the AJHL. He played football and ran track at Merrill High School and is the son of David and Kelly Purmal.
