Matt Deschamps has joined the St. Lawrence University hockey staff as an assistant coach for the 2016-2017 season. Matt has spent the last two years in Austria with EC Red Bull Salzburg Hockey Club as the head coach of RBS U18 team and serving the club in director and development coordinator roles. During his time in Salzburg, Matt led the Red Bulls to two of its most successful seasons at the U18 level winning an EBJL Championship in 2015 and in 2016 led all EC Red Bull Teams with the highest winning percentage of 75% playing against Swiss U20 and U18 teams from Finnish, Czech, USA and Canada.
Deschamps spent his college years in Orono playing for the University of Maine Black Bears. The highlights of his career at Maine include notching an assist on the goal in triple-overtime to win the 2004 Hockey East Championship, four appearances in the NCAA Tournament and two trips to the NCAA Finals. As a senior, Deschamps was an assistant captain of the Black Bears, recipient of the First Annual Shawn Walsh Memorial Scholarship, and was presented with the Richard Britt Award for Perseverance. He graduated from Maine in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in public policy, management.
After college, Deschamps attended training camp with the National Hockey League’s San Jose Sharks in 2005. During a five-year professional career, Deschamps had stops playing in the American Hockey League and East Coast Hockey League. Deschamps attended the Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut. Matt now resides in Canton with his wife Kelly, two sons Dean and Graeme, a daughter Claire and their Golden Retriever Oscar.
