Prior to St. Lawrence

The DCL Large League Defensive Player of the Year for Lincoln Sudbury, van Leer was a Boston Globe, Boston Herald and Metrowest All-Scholastic selection. A three-sport athlete, van Leer also excelled on the indoor track and on the lacrosse field. In indoor track, he posted a third-place finish in the 300-meter run at the Massachusetts State Championships and was eighth in the sprint medley relay at New Balance Nationals. He was an All-America selection in lacrosse, helping to lead his team to three state championships.
