Prior to St. Lawrence

Kagan played golf and was a member of the ski team at Steamboat Springs High School. He was a Western Regional champion in golf and captain of team his junior and senior years. He was also a individual state champion in the giant slalom and slalom his senior year of skiing and earned All-State honors.
