Prior to St. Lawrence

Welch was a member of the soccer and Alpine ski teams at Steamboat Mountain. He was captain of the soccer team and earned All-Conference Honorable Mention honors. Academically, he was an honor roll student and earned the Competitive Winter Athlete Award and the Geography Award.
