Academic Eligibility

Division I student-athletes at St. Lawrence University:

  • Must be enrolled full time at all times during the academic term, which is a minimum of 3.6 units per semester.
  • At the beginning of the second year, must have 1.80 GPA; the minimum grade point average required for graduation is 2.0.
  • Upon completion of the second year, students must designate degree program. 
  • At the beginning of the third year, must have 1.90 GPA; the minimum grade point average required for graduation is 2.0.
  • At the beginning of the fourth year, must have GPA of 2.0 or higher, which meets the required average for graduation.
  • NCAA Bylaw 14.01.2 Academic Status: To be eligible to represent an institution in intercollegiate athletics competition, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies, be in good academic standing and maintain progress toward a baccalaureate or equivalent degree.   • NCAA Bylaw 14.01.2.1 Good Academic Standing: To be eligible to represent an institution in intercollegiate athletics competition, a student-athlete shall be in good academic standing as determined by the academic authorities who determine the meaning of such phrases for all students of the institution, subject to controlling legislation of the conference(s) or similar association of which the institution is a member. The standard of good academic standing required for a student-athlete to represent an institution in intercollegiate athletics competition must be at least as demanding as the institutional standard applied to all students to participate in extracurricular activities.   • NCAA Bylaw 14.2.1 Requirement for Practice: To be eligible to participate in organized practice sessions, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in a minimum full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree as defined by the regulations of the certifying institution.   • NCAA Bylaw 14.2.2 Requirement for Competition: To be eligible for competition, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree, which shall not be less than 12 semester or quarter hours. (Revised: 6/1/07) 
  • 14.4.3 Eligibility for Competition
  • 14.4.3.1 Fulfillment of Credit-Hour Requirements: Eligibility for competition shall be determined based on satisfactory completion of at least: (Revised: 1/10/92, 10/31/02 effective 8/1/03, 3/10/04, 4/28/05)
    • (a) Twenty-four semester or 36 quarter hours of academic credit prior to the start of the student-athlete's second year of collegiate enrollment (third semester, fourth quarter);  
    • (b) Eighteen semester or 27 quarter hours of academic credit since the beginning of the previous fall term or since the beginning of the certifying institution's preceding regular two semesters or three quarters (hours earned during the summer may not be used to fulfill this requirement) (see Bylaw 14.4.3.1.4); and 
    • (c) Six semester or six quarter hours of academic credit during the preceding regular academic term (e.g., fall semester, winter quarter) in which the student-athlete has been enrolled full time at any collegiate institution (see Bylaw 14.4.3.4.3 for postseason certification). 
Division III student-athletes at St. Lawrence University:
  • NCAA Bylaw 14.01.2 Academic Status: To be eligible to represent an institution in intercollegiate athletics competition, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies, be in good academic standing and maintain satisfactory progress toward a baccalaureate or equivalent degree. A student-athlete enrolled in a two-year degree program shall be eligible only if that student-athlete was admitted to the institution under the same standards as four-year degree-seeking students and if the two-year degree program is not a terminal program. A waiver of the minimum full-time enrollment requirement may be granted for a student enrolled in the final term of the baccalaureate program (see Bylaw 14.1.7.1.7.1). Also, a student may represent the institution while enrolled as a graduate or professional student or while enrolled and seeking a second baccalaureate degree at the same institution (see Bylaw 14.1.8).   • NCAA Bylaw 14.1.7.1 Requirement for Practice or Competition: To be eligible for practice or competition, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree as defined by the institution. For purposes of this bylaw and its subsections, to be eligible for competition, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in not less than 12-semester or quarter hours, regardless of the institution's definition of minimum full-time program of studies. For practice only, a violation of this bylaw shall be considered an institutional violation per Bylaw 20.15.2; however, it shall not affect the student-athlete's eligibility.
