Prior to St. Lawrence

Brinkman was a member of the swimming and water polo teams at West Ottawa. His swim team won three conference championships, and he was the water polo team captain, earning First-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-Region honors. Brinkman was also a Junior Olympian in water polo. He was an All-Academic Team performer in both sports and was a member of the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar and an honor roll student.
