First-year goaltender
Maja Helge made 30 saves, but the No. 1 Wisconsin Badgers shutout the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team 6-0 in game two of their weekend series on Saturday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
The Badgers took an early 1-0 lead over the Saints, as Nela Lopušanová and Adéla Šapovalivová connected with Maggie Scannell, who beat the right leg of
Maja Helge for the one-goal advantage.
Scannell's goal was the lone goal in the first period, as the Badgers led 10-6 in shots on goal.
Wisconsin scored four unanswered goals, including two on the power play, in the second period and led 5-0 after 40 minutes of play.
Cassie Hall finished off scoring for the Badgers with a goal late in the third period for the 6-0 final.
"After the game last night, our team really found it and I thought we played an excellent first period with good breakouts and a lot of puck support and connectivity," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Second period we got away from some of the things that allowed us some success, and then I thought we attacked the third period pretty well."
"A lot of good stuff that we'll be able to build on and more forward and it'll be good to get on the road up to Maine, we'll spend plenty of time on the bus, be able to get away and be together and feel like a lot of the things we learned this weekend were hoping to apply next weekend with some success," Wells added.
Helge made 30 saves in her first collegiate start for the Scarlet and Brown, while Rhyah Stewart finished with 15 for the Badgers.
The Badgers led 37-15 in shots on goal and finished 2-for-4 on the power play. The Saints blocked 16 shots to Wisconsin's five.
St. Lawrence fell to 0-2-0 on the season, while Wisconsin improved to 2-0-0.
The Saints will hit the road next week, as they travel to Orono, Maine for a Thursday-Friday series against the Black Bears. Game times are scheduled for 6 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
