A first-half goal by
Zoe Rogan and a second-half tally from
Maddie Needham powered the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team to a 2-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Sandy MacAllaster Field in Canton, N.Y.
The Saints improved to 2-1-3 with the win, while the Lakers fell to 2-4-0.
The early game was controlled by the visiting Lakers, who had the Saints on their heels.
Reagan Murphy was called upon to make a huge save early as Kaylee Elliot found herself in the St. Lawrence with space in the 4
th minute. Her shot to the left post was stopped by the diving Murphy to keep Oswego off the scoreboard.
The Scarlet and Brown rewarded their keeper in the 13
th minute as they took the 1-0 lead. Captain
Chloe Bourque had the ball near the midfield line, and she fired a long lobbed through into the Lakers' box. On the other end of the ball was Rogan, who buried the feed to give the Saints the lead.
Murphy and Lucy Starzyk were each tasked with one more shot in the rest of the half as the game went to the break at 1-0.
St. Lawrence poured on three more shots in the opening moments of the second half, but Starzyk kept the Saints at bay.
As the half went along, grade-A chances were hard to come by until the 83
rd minute when the Scarlet and Brown nearly doubled their lead. A perfect through ball from Needham sprung
Barrett Freeman, who timed her run to get behind the back line. It was Freeman and the goalkeeper, and Starzyk kept the chance out to keep the Lakers in the match.
The dam broke in the 85
th minute, however, as the Saints cashed in on a set piece. A dangerous free kick from the left side of the pitch was taken by
Grace Gibson, who fired a cross in at the net. Needham got her head on the ball and beat the keeper to extend the lead to 2-0.
Murphy earned her first win of the year in the woodwork and stopped five shots for her first clean sheet of the season. Starzyk had a strong day in goal for Oswego, making six saves.
St. Lawrence led 18-12 in shots and 8-5 in shots on goal, while the Lakers had a 3-1 corner kick advantage.
The Scarlet and Brown will be back on Sandy MacAllaster Field at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, when the team hosts SUNY Canton in a cross-town derby.
