Gubbins Nets Two; Saints Fall to Ohio Wesleyan After Fourth-Quarter Surge

Hannah Gubbins scored early and scored twice, but a strong fourth quarter powered the Ohio Wesleyan Bishops to a 6-3 win over the St. Lawrence University field hockey team on Sunday morning at the William Smith Tournament in Geneva, N.Y.

The Saints broke through early, as Lily Gubbins connected with her sister Hannah just 2:20 into play to give St. Lawrence a 1-0 lead.

Ohio Wesleyan tied things up with 3:05 to play in the first quarter with an unassisted goal from Emma Reynolds.

The Bishops added two goals in the second, one from Mattison Hyland and a second from Reynolds to lead 3-1, but Charlotte Lehr scored on a penalty stroke with a rocket shot past Ohio Wesleyan goalkeeper Annabel Fauver to bring the Saints back within one before halftime.

Hannah Gubbins went 1v1 with Fauver and won, scoring her second of the game and her fifth of the season to knot the game once more with 5:06 remaining in the third.

Ohio Wesleyan sealed the win after shutting out the Saints 3-0 in the fourth quarter for the 6-3 final.

"We scored first, they battled back, Charlotte had a rocket of a penalty stroke, and Hannah had a great goal to tie things up, but they came back at us and we didn't respond," said head coach Fran Grembowicz. "Ohio Wesleyan is a really good team and played very patiently, especially in the fourth quarter and we didn't counterattack and build up from our defensive end the way we have been. Weekend wise we played two high-quality teams, we played pretty strong against them, looking forward to coming back stronger at home against Oswego next weekend."

Stella Gizzi logged four saves for SLU, while Payton Mindel stopped one for the Bishops. Lily Gubbins recorded one defensive save for the Saints, while Fauver tallied one for Ohio Wesleyan.

The Bishops finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots and led 10-0 in penalty corners.

St. Lawrence fell to 3-2 on the season, while Ohio Wesleyan improved to 5-1.

After starting the season on the road, the Saints will host Oswego State on Saturday, September 19 at 1 p.m. for their home opener.
