Sophomore
Ethan Harris led the offense, going 3-for-4 with a run, and first-year pitcher
Nathan Jackson went 2.2 innings, giving up no runs, but a big third inning from the home team and a pair of solo home runs sent the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a 6-2 loss to RIT in game one of the Liberty League Tournament on the campus of RIT in Rochester, N.Y.
St. Lawrence fell to 20-15 with the result and will look to stay in the hunt as they take on the loser of Hobart and RPI tomorrow morning.
The Scarlet and Brown jumped on the board in the top of the first as
Jack Finnegan led the game off with a double to right-center field. He was pushed over to third with a sacrifice bunt from
Nolan Widrick and came home on a
Willie Landman walk to make it 1-0 early.
David Zuhlsdorf got the start on the bump and allowed just one hit and saw just seven batters in the first two innings.
In the bottom of the third, the Tigers found the scoreboard and hung a crooked number. Three straight singles brought in the first two runs, and a two-out home run made it 4-1 for RIT.
The game quieted down for a couple of innings until the fifth and sixth innings, when the Tigers hit a pair of solo homers to balloon their advantage to 6-1.
Jackson came into the game in relief in the bottom of the sixth and promptly struck out the first batter on three pitches and forced a groundout to end the inning.
A pair of scattered singles in the next couple of innings finally gave way to some offense for the Saints in the ninth. Harris started the threat with a single and moved his way over to second on a wild pitch.
Max Cloutier proceeded to single him to third, where he would score on a fielder's choice from
Eoin Morrissey, who was in pinch-hit duty.
The Saints were unable to mount any more of a comeback as the Tigers closed things out.
Zuhlsdorf finished the day with 5.1 innings pitched, and Jackson went 2.1 innings, struck out one, and gave up no runs on two hits.
St. Lawrence will take on the loser of the Hobart and RPI game tomorrow morning at 9:30 am. with a chance to stay alive for both teams. Â
