The Saints' bats exploded for 27 runs and 34 hits in two games, and the team got great pitching in a complete team effort as the St. Lawrence University baseball team swept the University of Rochester with 20-8 and 7-1 wins on Friday night at Towers Field in Rochester, N.Y.
The Scarlet and Brown improved to 9-8 with the win and 4-3 in Liberty League play, while Rochester fell to 8-13 and 1-7 in conference play.
St. Lawrence used what is likely a program-record 14-run inning in game one to power them to 20 runs in game one, matching their highest output ever against Rochester since they started playing games in 19-4. It was also the most runs in a game for the Saints since the 2022 season, in which they hung 21 on the board in a 21-6 win over Muhlenberg College in Orlando, Fla.
Jack Finnegan was electrifying on the day, scoring five runs and driving in three. The speedy outfielder went 7-for-11 with a double, a triple, and four stolen bases.
John Donnellan also had a day going 5-for-9 with three runs, four RBI, a double, a home run, and two stolen bases.
Game One: St. Lawrence 20, Rochester 8 (7 Innings)
St. Lawrence got on the board early in the first game as Finnegan led the day off with a single and was advanced to third before being singled home by
Riley Reimund with two outs away. They proceeded to make it a 3-0 game in the second as Max Coutier was walked before being doubled home by
Mike Siano.
Nolan Widrick proceeded to pay it forward, singling to center to bring the shortstop home.
Rochester scored two runs in the bottom of the second, but it got pushed to a 4-2 game in the third as
Gabe Albertson took advantage of a 3-1 fastball and hammered the ball over the right field wall for a solo home run.
The Yellowjackets took the lead in the bottom of the third and extended their lead to 7-4 with a pair of runs in the fourth.
That was the last Rochester would have the lead on the day as the Scarlet and Brown hung 14 runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 18-7 lead. In the barrage, the Saints batted around twice, and Reimund had three plate appearances after leading off the inning.
Ethan Harris and Donnellan homered in the attack, and six different Saints had RBI.
From there, it was elementary for the Saints as they tacked on two runs in the top of the seventh off the bat of Harris and run-ruled the Yellowjackets.
Liam Hickey got the start for the Saints, striking out two batters in three innings of work.
Joshua Polumbo earned the win, giving up no runs on two hits in two innings, and struck out a pair.
JJ Humenay finished the final two innings, giving up one run on one hit, and had one strikeout.
Game Two: St. Lawrence 7, Rochester 1 (9 Innings)
After the fireworks of game one, the teams settled in for a bit of a pitchers' duel through the first three innings.
David Zuhlsdorf was rolling for the Saints, giving up just two hits in the first three innings.
St. Lawrence once again got hot and hung another crooked number at the top of the fourth to take the lead. After taking out their starter, the Yellowjackets struggled as a muffed throw led to an early baserunner. Donnellan would single to put two on, and both would advance on a balk. Siano smoked a single through the left side to plate both runners.
With two more runners on,
Eddie Morrissey hoisted the first pitch he saw into the Rochester night and off the wall for a two-RBI triple. The Saints plated their fifth run in the next at-bat as
Willie Landman got a payoff pitch in a 3-2 count and singled up the middle.
With run support in tow, Zuhlsdorf continued to throw for St. Lawrence, and his lead was increased to six as Landman once again singled home a runner in the fifth. The southpaw gave up his first run in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly, but worked his way out of the jam and turned the ball over to the pen.
St. Lawrence extended their lead again in the eighth when Albertson singled his way on before Donnellan jumped on the first pitch and brought him home. The lead was plenty big as
Michael Flyzik pitched the final three innings, giving up no runs on one hit, and he struck out three for the save as Zuhlsdorf took the win.
With the series win in their back pocket, the Saints will head back to Towers Field tomorrow at 2 p.m., looking for a sweep against Rochester.
