The St. Lawrence University baseball team used timely hitting and strong pitching to defeat Clarkson, 10-1, on Friday afternoon at Jack Phillips Stadium, clinching a spot in the Liberty League Tournament for the first time since the 2013 season.
St. Lawrence improved to 14-14 overall and 7-8 in Liberty League play, while Clarkson fell to 16-14 and 7-9 in conference action.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first two innings as
David Zuhlsdorf worked efficiently on the mound for the Saints, retiring the side in order in the first and second.
St. Lawrence broke through in the third inning.
Max Cloutier and
Mike Siano opened the frame with back‑to‑back singles, and
Jack Finnegan brought home the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to left field, giving the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Clarkson evened the score in the bottom half of the inning, using an error and a pair of singles before a fielder's choice allowed an unearned run to cross the plate.
The Saints seized control in the fourth.
John Gannon led off with a single, and
Willie Landman doubled down the left‑field line to put two runners in scoring position.
John Donnellan followed with an RBI single, and
Eddie Morrissey delivered the big blow of the inning, ripping a two‑run double to left‑center. An error on a sacrifice bunt and a bases‑loaded walk to Siano capped the four‑run frame and put St. Lawrence ahead, 5-1.
Neither team scored in the fifth or sixth innings as Zuhlsdorf and the Saints' defense worked out of traffic, and
Joshua Polumbo took over in relief to keep Clarkson off the board.
St. Lawrence put the game away in the eighth with another four‑run inning. After Landman reached and was replaced by pinch runner
Reis Stamaris, Donnellan singled to left. Following a sacrifice bunt,
Ethan Harris lifted a sacrifice fly to bring home a run.
With aggressive baserunning putting pressure on Clarkson, Finnegan singled up the middle to drive in two more, and
Nolan Widrick added an RBI single down the left‑field line to extend the lead to 9-1.
The Saints added their final run in the ninth when Gannon led off the inning with a solo home run to left field.
Clarkson threatened in the bottom of the ninth but was limited to a single as Polumbo closed out the game and earned the save.
Gannon finished with two hits, including the home run, while Donnellan went 3‑for‑5 and drove in a run. Finnegan added three RBI, and Morrissey drove in two with his fourth‑inning double.
Zuhlsdorf earned the win, allowing just one unearned run over five innings, and Polumbo worked four innings of relief to seal the victory and the save.
With the win, St. Lawrence secured its place in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament, marking the program's first postseason appearance since 2013.
The Saints and Knights will be back in action tomorrow at Tom Fay Field at noon for a twin bill.
