Thompson Posts 100th Career Hit, Connelly Walks Off Plattsburgh to Complete DH Sweep for Saints

Maeve Thompson drove in five runs across the doubleheader and registered her 100th career hit, Marleigh Monroe launched a two-run home run, and Hannah Reardon was sharp in the circle, as the St. Lawrence University softball team swept Plattsburgh 13-3 and 6-5 in a home doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Saints Softball Field in Canton, N.Y.

With the sweep, the Saints improved to 11-9 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, while the Cardinals fell to 10-13 and 4-4.

"We had an awesome hitting day today," said Saints head coach Tyler Pagaduan. "Everyone contributed offensively, and we played well on the defensive side of the ball as well. We are feeling good heading into a crucial conference weekend."

Game 1: St. Lawrence 13, Plattsburgh 3

After a scoreless first inning for both sides, Plattsburgh struck first in the top of the second. The Cardinals put runners on second and third and cashed in when Leila Toomey singled to center to score Natalie Rogers. They tacked on two more before the end of the frame, making it 3-0 Plattsburgh.

The Saints answered with a run in the bottom of the second. Madison Connelly doubled with one out, then after she advanced to third on an Emily Wendt groundout, Thompson drove the run in with an RBI infield single to cut the Cardinals' lead to 3-1.

St. Lawrence blew the game open with six runs in the third. Marleigh Monroe cranked a two-run home run to left center off Plattsburgh starter Evelyn Paul to tie the game 3-3, which was the first Saints homer at Saints Softball Field since April 17, 2019. Then the hits kept coming. Madison Connelly singled, Emily Wendt walked, and Maeve Thompson singled to right center to score Connelly. Thompson stole second, advanced on a wild pitch, then Caelen Jahnle singled down the left field line to score Wendt and move Thompson to third. That made it 5-3 Saints, giving them a lead they would not relinquish.

Two Plattsburgh errors followed to plate two more unearned runs, and Allison Kloft delivered a double to cap the inning. Plattsburgh turned to reliever Cadey Wheat but could not stop the bleeding. St. Lawrence scored six more in the fourth, highlighted by Thompson's bases-clearing triple to left center to run away with the 13-3 five-inning victory.

Reardon went the full five innings for the win, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Thompson was the offensive star, going 3-for-4 with a triple, five RBIs, and two stolen bases. Connelly went 3-for-3 with a double and scored three times. Monroe added a home run and two RBIs. Kloft contributed a double and an RBI.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 6, Plattsburgh 5

Game two was a back-and-forth affair all the way to the final out. Plattsburgh drew first blood in the second inning on an Emma Deo two-run double that scored Natalie Rogers.. The Cardinals later had a runner thrown out at home trying to extend the rally.

St. Lawrence answered in the bottom of the third, scoring twice when a Plattsburgh error opened the door. Gallas reached, stole second, and on a wild pitch by Morgan Ormerod paired with a throwing error by Deo, both Kloft and Gallas scored to tie the game 2-2.

Plattsburgh reclaimed the lead in the fifth when Sara Isaacs laced a two-run double to right center, scoring Meghan Stork and Jaylyn Linderman to make it 4-2. The Saints fought back in the bottom half — with two on and two outs, Connelly reached on a left field error as Thompson and Layne Fritz both scored to tie it back up at 4-4.

In the sixth, Plattsburgh scratched out another run when Sara Isaacs doubled in the third, pushing the score to 5-4. The Saints entered the final frame trailing by one.

St. Lawrence saved its best for last. Allison Kloft led off the seventh with a double to left. Abby Gallas singled to put runners on the corners, then stole second. Connelly stepped up and delivered a two-run walk-off single to left, scoring both Kloft and Gallas to win the game.

Madison Smith got the win and the complete game for the Saints, allowing five runs, but only three earned, on nine hits with three strikeouts. It was by far the longest outing of her collegiate career. Ormerod took the loss for Plattsburgh, giving up six runs on 10 St. Lawrence hits.

For the Saints, Kloft and Gallas each scored twice, while Connelly drove in the two decisive runs.
