Gannon Drives in Four Runs; Saints Drop a Pair to Vassar

The St. Lawrence University baseball team jumped out to an early lead in game one, but a late comeback and a three-run home run lifted Vassar to a sweep against the Saints on Saturday afternoon at Tom Fay Field in Liberty League play.

St. Lawrence moved to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in conference action, while Vassar improved to 9-14 on the season and 5-6 in league play.

Game one: St. Lawrence 7, Vassar 8 (9 innings)

The Saints wasted no time opening the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Jack Finnegan led off the game with a single up the middle, and Nolan Widrick followed with a double to center field, bringing Finnegan home. Two batters later, John Gannon launched a two-run home run to left field, putting St. Lawrence ahead 3-0. John Donnellan capped the inning with a solo shot to left, giving the Scarlet and Brown a 4-0 advantage after one.

Vassar responded in the top of the second inning. Eric Wallick singled and eventually came around to score on an RBI single from Noah Stockman, trimming the Saints' lead to 4-1.

St. Lawrence answered again in the bottom half of the inning, taking advantage of a Vassar error. After Max Cloutier reached and moved into scoring position, Widrick delivered an RBI single to right field, followed by a run-scoring single from Gannon to extend the lead to 6-1.

The Saints added another run in the third inning when Donnellan singled, advanced on a base hit by Ethan Harris, and crossed the plate on a double play off the bat of Cloutier, making it 7-1.

Momentum shifted in the top of the fourth as Vassar put together its biggest inning of the afternoon. The Brewers strung together four hits, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple from Jensen Bergman, and added a sacrifice fly later in the frame to score five runs and cut the deficit to 7-6.

From that point on, pitching took over. Joe LaPrade entered in relief for St. Lawrence in the fifth inning and settled the game down, working into the ninth and holding Vassar in check through the middle frames. The Saints generated some traffic offensively but were unable to add to their early total.

Vassar finally broke through again in the top of the ninth. After a leadoff double and a bunt single put runners on the corners, a sacrifice and a walk loaded the bases. Stockman drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game, and a wild pitch allowed the go-ahead run to score, giving the Brewers an 8-7 edge.

St. Lawrence was unable to answer in the bottom of the ninth, as Vassar's bullpen closed the door to secure the one-run victory.

David Zuhlsdorf pitched the first four innings on the hill, while LaPrade struck out eight batters in five innings of work.

Game two: St. Lawrence 2, Vassar 4 (9 innings)

The Saints opened the scoring in the bottom of the second of game two. Eddie Morrissey reached on an error and moved to third before Mike Siano lined an RBI single down the left‑field line to give St. Lawrence a 1–0 lead.

Vassar responded with a three‑run fourth inning to take control. After a leadoff double and a single put runners on the corners, Jack Johnson lifted a three‑run home run over the left‑field fence to make it 3–1.

St. Lawrence cut into the deficit in the fifth. Riley Reimund worked a walk and later scored when Gannon singled to left, trimming the Brewers' lead to 3-2.

Vassar added an unearned insurance run in the ninth before the Saints were retired in order in the bottom half.

Siano finished 2‑for‑4 with an RBI, while Gannon went 2‑for‑4 and drove in a run. Widrick also added a hit as St. Lawrence left 10 runners on base.

Liam Hickey took the loss, allowing three runs in four innings. Joshua Polumbo, and Nathan Jackson combined for five innings of relief, surrendering just one unearned run.

St. Lawrence will be back in action next Tuesday when it hosts Middlebury at Tom Fay Field.
