Senior
Willie Landman led the way offensively, going 3-for-7 with four RBI and a run scored, while sophomore
Noah Clausen picked up his second win of the season, as the St. Lawrence University baseball team took game one of a doubleheader split against Keuka College on Sunday on the campus of Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, N.Y.
St. Lawrence moved to 4-3 on the season, while Keuka went to 1-2.
Game 1: St. Lawrence 2, Keuka 1 (7 Innings)
In game one, both offenses were kept at bay for the most part, with the first run crossing home plate in the bottom of the second for Keuka. An inning-starting hit by pitch, followed by an error and a walk, loaded the bases with two outs. The Saints walked a run home, but
James Morr limited the damage with a fly out in the next at-bat.
Clausen took the bump in the second inning and started dealing for the Scarlet and Brown.
St. Lawrence proceeded to take the lead in the top of the fourth after Keuka changed pitchers before the inning. Landman led off the inning, reaching on an error, and was sent around to score two at-bats later when
Jack Finnegan smoked a triple to center field, making it a 1-1 game. Senior
John Donnellan brought Finnegan home with a sacrifice fly to take the lead for the Saints.
Clausen set Keuka down in order in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, and despite a hit by pitch and a single, cruised through the sixth without yielding a run. The sophomore rolled into the bottom of the seventh, where he forced a fly out, ground out, and with a full count, struck out the final batter for his second win of the season.
Clausen finished with five innings pitched, two strikeouts, and no runs allowed. Morr went two innings for the Saints, striking out one batter and allowing no earned runs. Â
Game 2: St. Lawrence 6, Keuka 8 (9 innings)
In game two, the bats came to life in both dugouts. St. Lawrence got things going at the top of the first as
Mike Siano earned a walk and advanced to third thanks to a single from
John Gannon. Landman singled the shortstop home to make it 1-0.
Keuka put up a crooked number, plating five runs in the bottom of the second, all of which came with two outs.
The Saints responded in the next half-inning, scoring three of their own.
Max Cloutier led off the inning with a single and was followed by Siano, who was hit by a pitch, and
Eddie Morrissey, who loaded the bases with a bunt single. Gannon walked a runner home to score a run, then Landman reached on a fielder's choice to score Siano.
Riley Reimund made it a 5-4 game in the next at-bat, singling through the left side.
St. Lawrence would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. The Scarlet and Brown loaded the bases with two outs, thanks to an intentional walk to Gannon. Landman singled to right field to score two runs as the Saints went up 6-5.
Things cruised along to the bottom of the sixth, where Keuka brought three runs in to reclaim the lead at 8-6.
St. Lawrence was unable to get anymore runs across as the game went final.
Michael Flyzik got the start in game two, pitching two innings and striking out a pair.
Brendan Young took the next three innings and struck out four, while
Ryan McCausland and
JJ Humenay combined to pitch the final three innings.
St. Lawrence will be back on the field next Saturday, March 14, when the team heads to Clinton, N.Y. to take on Hamilton in a doubleheader.
