Game Recap: Softball |

Monroe Deals in Complete-Game Gem; Thompson, Kloft Garner Three Hits in Two Saints Wins

Marleigh Monroe nearly had a complete-game shutout in her fourth start of the year, leading the St. Lawrence University softball team to a win over Colby in game one, and offense from Maeve Thompson, Allison Kloft, and Isabel Moreno helped the Saints to another win in game two against Carleton on Thursday in Clermont, Fla.

That moves their overall record to 3-7, as they take their first two-game sweep of 2026 to kick off the second half of their Sunshine State swing.

"We had a great day today!" said Saints head coach Tyler Pagaduan. "I am proud of this group. We had contributions from up and down the lineup. Sweeping two strong opponents in Colby and Carleton was a huge momentum boost for the group. It will now be important to use that momentum to keep our energy up in our final games in Florida."

Game 1: Colby 1, St. Lawrence 3

St. Lawrence began the game strong in their first time at the plate, sending two runners to the basepaths following singles from Thompson and Caelen Jahnle. Kloft then stepped up and launched a fly ball to right field. It glanced off the glove of the Colby outfielder allowing one run to score. Leah VerSchneider later added the second RBI of the inning on a groundout, and the score was 2-0.

Colby responded, but weren't able to completely erase the deficit in their first offensive rally of the game. Carissa Cassidy reached on an error in the top of the third and was brought home on an RBI single by Juliana Kiley, bringing the score to 2-1.

St. Lawrence responded by restoring their two-run lead. With two outs and a runner on first, Madison Connelly roped a ball into right-center that got behind the two outfielders. Marina Juan legged it out all the way from first, making it 3-1 Saints on the Connelly RBI double.

In the top of the sixth, Colby sent a runner to the basepaths with two outs, and tested the Saints defense with a fly to shallow right field, but Isabel Moreno charged it and came up with a diving nab to preserve the 3-1 lead.

Colby then tested the Saints again in the seventh with a leadoff hit in their last time at the plate. But Monroe bared down and preserved the complete game victory, inducing two flyouts and fielding the third out herself.

The sophomore hurler finished the game with seven full innings, allowing one unearned run, four hits, walking one and striking out five. It was her first win of 2026. Offensively, Kloft's two hits were the highlight in a low-scoring affair. Connelly and VerSchneider had the lone RBIs.

Game 2: St. Lawrence 6, Carleton 4

After Carleton got on the board first in the opening inning, Saints starter Hannah Reardon settled into the game until the Saints got on the board with the first muti-run inning of the contest. SLU loaded up the bases with one out for Allison Kloft, and Kloft drove in the game-tying run on sacrifice fly.

The Saints then took the lead on a Moreno single to left, making it 2-1. Jahnle tried to stretch the lead to two, but was thrown out to end the threat and keep it 2-1 in the top of the third. Carleton then tied the game 2-2 in the next half-inning when a run scored on a fielding error in the outfield.

However, the roller coaster of scoring continued, as St. Lawrence pushed back in front in the top of the fourth. VerSchneider walked in the leadoff spot to get the offense rolling, then moseyed into scoring position on a passed ball. Juan the drove her home with a monster shot into the gap, making it 3-2 Saints.

Carleton took their second lead of the game in the fifth to make it 4-3, forcing the Saints to play from behind. They got their last chance in the top of the seventh, and made the most of it.

Emily Wendt kicked things off by walking and stealing second. Then Maeve Thompson had an infield knock with nobody out, and the Scarlet and Brown took advantage of a wild pitch to move both runners into scoring position with nobody away.

Allison Kloft then made it to first base on a fielder's choice, after the Knights failed to tag Wendt near third giving the Saints a bases-loaded-one-out situation. Moreno then worked an RBI walk to even the game, and VerSchneider grounded one to third and a run scored on a fielding error to give SLU the go-ahead run. Kloft later scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4.

Madison Smith came back out for her third inning of work in the bottom of the seventh and locked it down for the first-year's second career victory. She allowed one hit and struck out one in the effort. Reardon ended the game with four runs on seven hits, one walk, and one strikeout, getting the no-decision.

Thompson was the only Saint to register a multi-hit game in the second contest, going two-for-three with two runs scored and a walk. Moreno led the team with two ribbies, going one-for-three with the go-ahead RBI on a walk. Kloft added a hit, RBI, and run scored over three at bats. On the bases, Wendt added two stolen bases to her full-day total of three, a team-high for St. Lawrence.
