Jackie Malley had 12 points off 4-9 shooting, but it wasn't enough to power the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team past one of the Liberty League's top teams. They fell 71-49 to RIT in the second half of their weekend trip downstate.
That brings the Saints' Liberty League record to 9-5, adding an overall mark of 14-7 with four games to play in conference competition. They remain in fourth place after Vassar also suffered a loss on Saturday.
"We didn't execute very well today and we needed to against the first-place team," said Saints head coach
Dan Roiger. "They had their way with us in the post. Their defense is good and we couldn't attack the rim well. However, we got the split on the road and get back to work for the penultimate weekend."
Hannah Van Dyke and
Mason Baker-Schlendering provided some early Saints scoring, but it was RIT who ended up ahead 18-8 after the first quarter. St. Lawrence showed signs of life in the second quarter, highlighted by a Malley three-pointer and a fast-break layup from
Izzy Caron that briefly cut the deficit, but RIT's dominance on the boards and timely scoring from Faye Kaplinski helped the Tigers maintain a 34-21 lead heading into the locker room.
The second half began with RIT extending their advantage through a high-scoring third quarter, where they outpaced the Saints 20-15, ultimately locking down a victory.
After Malley,
Emily Wendt and Baker-Schlendering tied for second on the team with six points apiece.
Hannah Van Dyke lead the Saints on the glass with five boards. Caron had four assists and two steals, tops in both categories.
St. Lawrence returns to the road next weekend, as they head to William Smith and Skidmore for their final road weekend of the Liberty League season. They return home to wrap up the regular season against Rensselaer and Union the following weekend.
