The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team wrapped up the 2025-26 regular season with senior day on Saturday afternoon, preceding a 63-50 loss to Union at Burkman Gymnasium, but they now know their opponent in the first round of the Liberty League tournament this Friday.
No. 4 seeded St. Lawrence will host No. 5 Vassar on Tuesday night at Burkman Gymnasium, after the Saints finished their season with a 16-9 overall record, going 11-7 in Liberty League play. They split their season series with the Brewers.
"Today was not our day against a motivated and very strong Union team," said Saints head coach
Dan Roiger of the Garnet Chargers, who clinched a regular season Liberty League title with their win over the Saints. "We are excited to host a playoff game and look forward to the week ahead."
The Saints also honored their four seniors –
Margaret Dougher,
Jackie Malley,
Mason Baker-Schlendering, and
Hannah Van Dyke – with an on-court pre-game ceremony.
The Saints stayed within striking distance through the first half, trailing 33-26 at the break, but a difficult third quarter in which they were held to just six points on 2-15 shooting allowed the Garnet Chargers to extend their lead to double digits.
Despite the setback, the Saints showed late-game resilience by outscoring Union 18-17 in the final frame, fueled by a defensive effort that forced 15 turnovers and recorded nine steals.
St. Lawrence's effort was anchored by
Elizabeth Flynn, who posted a double-double with 13 points and a game-high 12 rebounds while adding four steals.
Jackie Malley also reached double figures with 10 points and three assists, while
Stevie Bannon provided a significant spark off the bench with eight points and four rebounds.
Norah Niesz helped facilitate the offense with four assists to go along with four points and two steals.
The Saints' bench was a major bright spot, outscoring Union's reserves 24-15. St. Lawrence also took care of the ball. Ultimately, the game came down to shooting; the Saints struggled to find their rhythm, shooting 26.9 per cent from the field and 18.2 per cent from three-point range.
St. Lawrence now prepares for their return to the Liberty League tournament, where they look to advance past the first round for the first time since 2022 when they advanced to the championship game.
