Elizabeth Flynn posted a double-double, but a strong third quarter lifted Skidmore to a 66-51 home victory against the St. Lawrence University women's basketball team on Friday afternoon in front of a large Williamson Sports Center crowd in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.
Â
The loss complicates St. Lawrence's bid for a home tournament game in the first round of the Liberty League playoffs. It brings the Saints' record to 10-6 in conference and 15-8 overall. Currently, they stand fourth in the Liberty League but are just one win ahead of both the Thoroughbreds and Vassar, who hold 9-7 records.
Â
This comes prior to a final regular season weekend next week, where the Saints take on third-place Rensselaer and first-place Union. A win in either of those contests would give St. Lawrence at least a tie for fourth, if not sole possession. Two losses would force the Saints to watch the out of town scoreboard to determine the location of their first round game.
"Skidmore played a great second half," said Saints head coach
Dan Roiger. "We weren't able to handle their sustained pressure on the ball. We lost our mental focus in the last two quarters and allowed them to play to their strengths. Full marks to them, they deserved to win and played a better game than we did."
Â
The game began with the two teams playing to a tie at the culmination of the opening quarter. Skidmore led for the opening portion before the Scarlet and Brown grabbed am 11-10 lead at 4:44 via a Flynn jumper.
Stevie Bannon then downed a three-ball to extend the Saints' lead to four at 14-10, but Skidmore would score the final four points of the quarter to tie it.
Â
There were then four lead changes in the second quarter, as the teams traded punches with neither side taking more than a three-point lead. That led to a one-point game at halftime, where the Saints trailed 26-25.
Â
Flynn came out with authority in the second half, gathering a rebound and connecting with a three-pointer right off the hop to make it 28-26 St. Lawrence. Skidmore returned fire immediately though, slicing in a jumper then dropping two foul shots to regain a two-point advantage. From there, they outscored the Saint 24-9 to take a commanding lead entering the final quarter. Skidmore had the advantage again in the fourth and finished an upset win over the Saints.
Â
Flynn concluded the contest with 15 points and 12 rebounds, both team highs.
Jackie Malley had eight points, and both
Mason Baker-Schlendering and
Hannah Van Dyke chipped in with eight boards piece.
Norah Niesz led the team in assists, dishing out three.
Â
St. Lawrence now wraps their regular season with their final weekend against Rensselaer and Union beginning on Friday, February 20.
