Four different Saints scored and the team fought back within a goal twice, but Union held onto a 5-4 win over the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Friday evening in Schenectady, N.Y.
SLU moved to 4-9-0 on the season and 2-1-0 in ECAC play, while Union improved to 8-4-0, 3-3-0.
Ella Skotty scored first for Union, as a shot from below the right circle took a weird bounce off a St. Lawrence defender and found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead at 5:24 of the first.
Evie Hanson doubled up on the Garnet Charger's lead, as she crossed the Saints' blue line and fired from the top of the circle beating Saints' goaltender
Kassidy Lawrence stick side.
Hanson added her second of the game, as Union scored three times in the first 13 minutes to build a 3-0 lead over the Saints.
Senior captain
Abby Hehl cut into Union's lead, as she went five-hole from the slot to beat Garnet Chargers goaltender Monja Wagner to make it 3-1 with just under five minutes remaining in the first frame.
Union led 11-6 in shots on goal after the first.
The Saints got a quick start to open the second period, as
Ella Nancarrow cashed in on a loose puck and slipped one past Wagner to bring the game back within one.
The Garnet Chargers then scored a pair of goals 34 seconds apart to build their three-goal lead back over the Saints.
SLU peppered Wagner in the second period and led 20-17 in shots on goal after 40 minutes.
Union scored 4:09 into the third on the power play, but the Saints challenged for offsides and the goal was called back.
Brooke Mulvihill bought SLU back within two with 10:59 to play in the third. She collected the puck in the neutral zone, dragged through two Union defenders and ripped a shot past Wagner to make it 5-3.
Just about three minutes later,
Kendall Doiron struck off the faceoff to bring the Saints back within one.
Head coach
Chris Wells pulled Lawrence for the final two minutes in seven seconds, but Union held on for the 5-4 final.
"Well we ran out of time in this one unfortunately," said Wells. "We had plenty of great chances the last period and we started to make some nice plays under pressure."Â
"We got better today even though we didn't get any points out of the game. We had a lot of resolve and connection on the bench and that's what it takes to win games and be successful in this league. Union capitalized on some nice chances and kept us from making a splash in the middle of the game."
Lawrence finished with 21 saves for the Saints, while Wagner made 37 for Union.
St. Lawrence outshot Union 73-37 and led 41-26 in shots on goal.
The Saints will make the trip over to Troy to take on RPI tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m.
"We will have to be sharp tomorrow," Wells added. "RPI is always very tough especially at home."
