Alexia Côté scored her second goal of the season with a buzzer beater, but the No. 13 Clarkson Golden Knights recorded a 3-1 win over the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Friday night at Cheel Arena.
A back-and-forth battle from the start, the Saints put some quality shots on net in the first, but a goal from Clarkson's Kennedy Sisson with 3:04 to play in the first gave the Golden Knights a 1-0 advantage after the first 20 minutes.
Clarkson doubled up on the Saints with a 3-on-1 fast break and a goal from Jessie Pellerin for the 2-0 lead in the second.
With 1:52 to play, the Saints pulled
Maja Helge for the extra attacker, but four seconds later Raedyn Spademan launched a shot the length of the ice for the empty netter, increasing the Golden Knights lead to 3-0.
The Saints ended on a high note, as Côté lit the lamp to put SLU on the board. Brooke Mulvhill collected the puck and with a successful screen, Côté fired a long-range shot from the point for the 3-1 final.
"We made a real good push in the third and started to figure some things out that we will be able to move on with next weekend," said head coach
Chris Wells. "Overall a much better effort than the previous game. Clarkson was able to make more plays than us when it mattered and that's why they were able to get the win."
Helge finished with 27 saves for the Scarlet and Brown, while Kalia Pharand made 26 for Clarkson.
The Golden Knights led in shots 56-50 and shots on goal 30-27.
St. Lawrence fell to 1-5-0, while Clarkson improved to 4-2-0.
The Saints are back on the road for another Thursday-Friday series next weekend. They'll faceoff against UNH on Thursday, October 15 at 5 p.m. and play their second school day game of the season on Friday the 16th at 11 a.m.
