Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Saints Complete Weekend Sweep with Second Straight Shutout and 4-0 Win at Harvard

Rylan Haslam scored two goals and Maja Helge stopped 14 shots to lead the St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to their second straight shutout and a weekend sweep with a 4-0 win over Harvard on Saturday afternoon in Cambridge, Mass.

St. Lawrence picked up six league points and improved to 4-8-0 on the season and 2-0-0 in ECAC play, while Harvard fell to 3-3-0 and 0-2-0.

The Saints struck first once again, as Jaylee MacKinnon collected the puck in the offensive zone, looked back and found a charging Nancarrow, who used a screen to go top corner, beating Harvard's Isabelle Whynot for the 1-0 lead.

SLU doubled their lead, as Nellie Svensson scored her first career goal in Scarlet and Brown. With 6:28 remaining in the first, after a miscommunication by the Crimson defense, Svensson turned and caught Whynot off guard for the 2-0 lead.

St. Lawrence controlled the scoreboard and led 9-3 in shots on goal after the first 20 minutes.

Next to the scoresheet was Haslam. Mae Severn left a drop pass for Kendall Doiron at the top of the key, Doiron fired and Haslam redirected the shot past Whynot for the 3-0 lead with 9:16 to play in the second period.

SLU continued to put shots on net, leading 17-9 in shots on goal after two periods.

Nancarrow picked up her second point of the afternoon, as she sent a long-range breakaway pass to Haslam at the blue line. Haslam then tallied her second of the afternoon, as she walked in and went forehand-backhand, icing the game 4-0.

"We got off to a great start on a nice goal from Ella," said head coach Chris Wells. "Our offensive zone time and ability to keep Harvard on defense helped us control parts of the game. For the first time in a while we were able to build on our lead and play solid hockey. Tacking on goals three and four allowed us to feel a bit more secure than we have felt in previous games. Our goaltending and penalty kill was excellent all weekend."

Helge stopped 14 shots for the win and her second collegiate shutout, while Whynot finished with 24 saves for Harvard.

The Saints led in shots (57-30), shots on goal (28-14), and killed off all three of Harvard's power play opportunities.

SLU is back on the road next weekend, as they head to the Capital district to take on Union and RPI. Game times return to their normal 6 p.m. and 3 p.m. time slots, respectively.
