Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Manganello Scores First Career Goal as Saints Draw RPI, 2-2

First-year Charlotte Manganello scored her first collegiate goal, and Aver Asom gave the Saints a second-half lead. Still, the St. Lawrence University women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 draw with Rensselaer on Saturday afternoon at ECAV Stadium in Troy, N.Y.

The Saints moved to 5-5-5 overall and 2-3-2 in Liberty League play, while the Engineers moved to 4-5-5 overall and 0-5-2 in conference action.

RPI struck first just 4:27 into the contest after Maddy Kaminski converted a penalty kick to give the home side an early 1-0 advantage.

The Scarlet and Brown settled in as the first half progressed and found the equalizer in the 40th minute. Zoe Rogan rattled a shot off the crossbar, and Manganello was in the right place at the right time to bury the rebound for her first collegiate goal and tie the match at 1-1. Rogan was credited with the assist.

St. Lawrence carried that momentum into the closing minutes of the half. Ella McPhaul and Kiki D'Anza each generated chances before the break, but the teams went into halftime deadlocked at one goal apiece.

The Saints turned up the pressure in the second half and repeatedly tested RPI goalkeeper Hanna Pihu.

D'Anza put three shots on target after the intermission, while Gwyn McGee also forced a save as St. Lawrence looked for a go-ahead goal.

The breakthrough came in the 75th minute. After checking into the match less than a minute earlier, Asom made an immediate impact, finding the back of the net to give the Saints their first lead of the afternoon at 2-1.

The Engineers continued to push for an equalizer and earned a pair of corner kicks in the final minutes.

Their persistence paid off in the 89th minute when Kaminski scored her second goal of the day off an assist from Isabelle Gelzhiser to level the score at 2-2.

Neither side could find a winner over the final moments as the match ended in a draw.

St. Lawrence finished with advantages in shots (9-6), shots on goal (6-2), and corner kicks (6-3).

D'Anza led the Saints with four shots, including three on goal, while RPI goalkeeper Hanna Pihu had four saves in 45 minutes of action.

The Saints will play their final two regular season games at home, beginning next Tuesday, October 27, when the team hosts Ithaca in a 3 p.m. match at Sandy MacAllaster Field.
