Saints Fall to Hobart in Saturday Afternoon Contest

The St. Lawrence University football team fell 41-0 in their Liberty League contest against Hobart on Saturday at Weeks Field at Leckonby Stadium.

The Saints fell to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in league play. The Statesmen improved to 4-3 and 2-2.

Hobart scored on its first two possessions, both on two-yard runs by E.J. Taylor, near the 10- and two-minute marks of the first quarter. Statesmen starting quarterback Aidan Conrath hit Johnny Harding from three yards out at 11:24 of the second, and Tristan Reynolds scored from two yards with under a minute to go in the half for a 28-0 lead.

St. Lawrence's defense created a chance in the second quarter when Luke Robillard forced a Taylor fumble and Dylan Varekamp recovered at the Saints' six-yard line. Hobart pushed the lead to 35-0 on Conrath's 53-yard pass to Marcus Peterson at 12:43 of the third. Harding closed the scoring with a 22-yard run at 14:51 of the fourth.

Late in the fourth, the Saints stopped Hobart on downs at their own five-yard line. St. Lawrence then drove 63 yards in 11 plays to the Hobart 17 before a fourth-down incompletion with 59 seconds left turned the ball over on downs and sealed the 41-0 score.

Drew Lazcano, Savino Morelli and Antonio Ricca each made nine tackles for St. Lawrence. That is a career-high for Ricca and a season-best for Morelli. Jack Finnegan broke up four passes and returned a kickoff 31 yards. Rory McGuire averaged 40 yards on six punts, including two of 51 yards, and drilled one inside the Hobart 10-yard line.

The Saints now head to Troy, N.Y. to face off against Rensselaer as they continue their conference slate against the Engineers. The game is set for Saturday, October 31 at 12 p.m.
