Senior captains
Baker Diaz and
Dennis Argueta each scored, while sophomore goalkeeper
Zach Amato made nine saves as the No. 4 St. Lawrence University men's soccer team played to a 2-2 draw against Ithaca on Wednesday afternoon at Carp Wood Field in Ithaca, N.Y.
The Saints moved to 9-0-3 overall and 4-0-2 in Liberty League play, while the Bombers moved to 7-1-7 overall and 0-0-5 in conference action.
St. Lawrence wasted little time getting on the board, striking just 28 seconds into the match.
Nichlas Petrone controlled the ball in the midfield and made a deep run into the Ithaca end. He threaded a through ball to Diaz, who found the back of the net for his second goal of the season to give the Scarlet and Brown an early 1-0 lead.
The Bombers responded quickly and leveled the score in the seventh minute when Cameron Wooten scored off an assist from Liam Breslin.
Ithaca controlled much of the possession and generated a number of chances throughout the opening half, but Amato was sharp between the posts. The sophomore goalkeeper made four first-half saves, including a pair of stops on Joshua Bourdoulous and another on Edin Estrada, to help keep the match level.
The Saints regained the lead late in the opening frame.
Petrone lined up for a corner kick in the 41st minute and sent in an in-swinging ball to Diaz, who got a head on the ball. It then fell to Argueta, who fired it off the crossbar and into the net to send St. Lawrence into halftime with a 2-1 advantage.
Ithaca continued to press in the second half, finishing with 25 shots and 11 shots on goal in the contest. Amato remained busy, making five more saves after the break to preserve the lead.
The Bombers came close on several occasions, including a shot off the woodwork by Declan Clark in the 75th minute. Ithaca eventually found the equalizer in the 89th minute when Maddox Ward scored off an assist from Clark to make it a 2-2 match with 90 seconds to go.
Neither side could find a winner in the closing moments as the teams settled for a draw.
Amato finished with nine saves, while Brayden Milbrandt made two stops for Ithaca. The Bombers held advantages in shots (25-6), shots on goal (11-4), and corner kicks (16-2).
The Saints will continue their road swing on Saturday when the team heads to RIT for a 3 p.m. tilt against the Tigers.
