Sister duo
Hannah Gubbins and
Lily Gubbins combined for both goals, as the St. Lawrence University field hockey team stunned William Smith with a 2-1 win, celebrating the Class of 2027 on senior day at North Country Field, Saturday afternoon.
Prior to today's game, the Saints honored the four members of their graduating class –
Ali Card,
Lily Gubbins,
Sofia Passalacqua, and
Maddy Shaw.
The Gubbins' first goal came with 3:45 to play in the second quarter.
Garen Steiner found
Lily Gubbins, who found her sister
Hannah Gubbins through traffic for the 1-0 lead.
The Saints extended their lead to 2-0 with 9:44 remaining in the fourth quarter, as both Lily and
Hannah Gubbins went on a fast break and went 2-on-1 with the Heron's defender for the two-goal advantage.
William Smith's Caroline Kogut scored off the penalty corner to put the Herons on the board and close the gap to one with 1:38 to play.
First-year goalkeeper
Stella Gizzi and the Saints' defense were up to the task and held the Herons at bay to come away with the 2-1 win.
"We worked hard this past week in practice and were really fired up to take what we had worked on all week and put it into today's game," said head coach
Fran Grembowicz. "We put a complete game together today and both offensively and defensively combined and worked well up the field. Defensively Barny and Gizzi had both great days and our sister duo of Lily and Hannah connected so well together and it's great to get the assists on your sister's goals on senior day."
"I'm proud of the whole team and especially our four seniors. They've worked hard and contributed so much over the past four years, they deserved this win on senior day."
Gizzi made 13 saves in the win, while Olivia Terranova made six for the Herons.
William Smith finished with a 30-11 advantage in shots, a 14-9 edge in shots on goal and a 14-5 advantage in penalty corners.
SLU improved to 5-6 on the season and 1-3 in Liberty League play, while William Smith fell to 6-8 and 1-2, respectively.
The Saints travel to Troy, N.Y. to take on RPI next Friday, October 16 at 4 p.m.
