Saints Open Weekend with Liberty League Loss to RIT

The St. Lawrence University women's basketball team dropped a 62-35 decision to RIT on Friday evening.

With the loss, St. Lawrence falls to 9-6 overall and 4-4 in Liberty League play.

"The basket had a lid on it for us tonight," said Saints head coach Dan Roiger. "We didn't give ourselves a chance to win the game with our shooting. Saturday's game will be critical for us as we look ahead."

The Scarlet and Brown opened the scoring with a Niesz three-pointer, pulling the Saints within one. However, that proved to be the closest margin of the night. Offensive rhythm was hard to come by early, as only three Saints found the basket in the opening frame.

The struggle continued into the second quarter. Margaret Dougher drained her second triple of the day four minutes in, but the Saints found it difficult to find the basket for the remainder of the quarter. St. Lawrence headed into the locker room trailing 28-17.

The third quarter proved to be the Saints' most productive, accounting for 15 of their 35 points. After a scoreless opening five minutes, Niesz broke the drought with a jumper, followed immediately by a Jackie Malley three-pointer.

Despite the third-quarter spark, the momentum stalled in the final period. The Tigers' defense stifled the Saints, holding them to just three points on a lone three-ball from Bannon. RIT pulled away for the 27-point victory.

Stevie Bannon came off the bench led the Saints' offense with 13 points, while Norah Niesz and Hannah Van Dyke anchored the glass with five rebounds apiece. It was a tough night from the floor, as the team shot just 12-of-57 (21 per cent) on the evening.

The Saints have a quick turnaround with a Saturday afternoon tip as they host Ithaca in a pivotal contest for the conference standings at 2 p.m.
