The No. 5-seeded St. Lawrence University softball team had their season come to an end in the Liberty League play-in game, falling 8-0 to No. 4 seed Rensselaer at the conference tournament hosted by the University of Rochester.
Their season ends with an overall record of 21-16, including a 5-9 conference record and the lone playoff loss in the single elimination play-in game.
Both starting pitchers, Ava Markert for Rensselaer and
Izzy Melanson for St. Lawrence, motored through the first inning without allowing a run. But after a scoreless top of the second for the Saints, RPI poured it on in the bottom half of the inning.
They got the bases loaded with nobody out, then broke the tie with a Ryleigh Falvey bloop single into shallow left field to make it 1-0. The next three batters had at least one RBI, putting RPI up 5-0. Then, with a runner on, RPI batter Addison Shaffer blasted a two-run homer over the left field foul pole to make it 7-0 heading to the third.
Saints reliver
Marleigh Monroe managed to set down the Engineers in order in the third. While the Saints notched their first two hits of the game in the fourth – off the bats of
Allison Kloft and
Maeve Thompson in the middle of the order – they were held off the scoresheet again by Markert and the RPI defense.
In the fifth, the Engineers loaded the bases with nobody out, and Maddy Brooks grounded out to first base. That brought in the eighth run of the game, activating the NCAA's eight-run rule and ending the game. RPI advanced to the double elimination portion of the conference tournament.
Kloft and Thompson ended the game as the lone Saints to reach base. Markert got the win for RPI, allowing no runs, walking no one, and going five complete. Melanson got the loss, allowing seven runs on eight hits over one and two-thirds innings pitched. She also didn't walk anyone.
Marleigh Monroe had a nice outing in relief, allowing one run on two hits over two and two-thirds innings of work. Â
