The St. Lawrence University softball team rode a four-hit performance from
Maeve Thompson, a three-hit second game from
Vivian Johnson, and a complete-game from pitcher
Hannah Reardon to a midweek non-conference sweep.
They downed the Plattsburgh State Cardinals 4-1 and 10-8 in back-to-back games at Cardinal Field in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Wednesday.
The sweep brings their record to 19-13, equaling their total number of victoriesÂ

Game 1: St. Lawrence 4, Plattsburgh State 1
After a scoreless Saints side of the first, Plattsburgh took the lead in their half of the opening frame. They had a hit on the first two batters of the game, with the second of them driving a run in. That opened the scoring for the home team.Â
St. Lawrence had a response in the second inning. After a
Leah VerSchneider single,
Sofia Camillieri tripled into right-center to drive her home and get the game-tying RBI.Â
That was the last run of regulation innings, after Saints starting pitcher
Hannah Reardon and her Plattsburgh counterpart Carly Gemmett dueled all afternoon, both throwing each regulation inning for their respective side.
Plattsburgh's best chance to add more runs came in the bottom of the seventh, but Reardon induced a bases-loaded ground ball to send the game to extras on a force out at second. Reardon would throw the entire game for the Scarlet and Brown, earning her first collegiate victory with a strong outing. She allowed one earned run on seven hits, allowed no walks and struck out three.Â
The winning inning came for the Saints in the eighth, wasting no time in their first extra inning. The teams used the international tiebreaker, putting a runner on second to start the eighth. That was Camillieri, who stole third, then Wendt and Johnson walked to load the bases with nobody out.Â
Jahnle would reach on a fielder's choice at home, then Kloft's big one-out single scored Johnson and Wendt. A sac fly by
Maeve Thompson on the next plate appearance gave St. Lawrence another run. 4-1 would stand as the final score after Reardon mowed down the Cardinals with two strikeouts in the eighth. Â
Â
Game 2: St. Lawrence 10, Plattsburgh State 8
In a much higher scoring second game of the twin bill, this time it was St. Lawrence who took an early advantage off an RBI knock from Thompson. She scored Johnson, who had a lead off double earlier in the inning and it was 1-0 Saints.Â
Plattsburgh responded with runs in the bottom of the first for the second straight game, plating two and taking a 2-1 lead. However, St. Lawrence wouldn't let Plattsburgh hold then lead for long – another triple, this one from
Stella VanGee, brought
Emily Wendt around in the top of the second to tie the game 2-2. VanGee would later score, giving the Scarlet and Brown a 3-2 lead.
After a three-up, three-down inning for Saints starter
Izzy Melanson in the second, St. Lawrence put up a big inning in the third.
Caelen Jahnle walked to start off the inning, then Thompson powered an RBI double beyond the reach of the Cardinals' outfielders. That scored Jahnle to make it 4-2.
Camillieri, who now has a hit in each of her last four games, brought Thompson around later in the inning to give the Saints a three-run lead. Then
Madison Connelly was hit by a pitch, loading the bases, and VanGee worked the RBI walk to make it 6-2. Later in the inning, Johnson posted one of her three singles, driving in two runs to make it 8-2.
The Cardinals would cut the four in their half of the third, then 8-5 on a single in the fourth. The score would remain there until the seventh, when St. Lawrence earned some insurance runs.Â
Marina Juan began the top of the Saints inning by tripling down the right field line, then
Marleigh Monroe came up with a pinch-hit RBI double later in the inning. Then later in the inning, VanGee put a ball into left field and scored Wendt.
Going into the bottom of the seventh, St. Lawrence led 10-5 – and they needed their expanded lead, as the Cardinals plated three runs in their half of the inning. Saints reliever
Sofia Berryhill locked it down from there, earning the save and the Saints walked away with a sweep.
