Siano and Verrastro Each Drive in a Pair; Baseball Falls 9-6 to Plattsburgh

Mike Siano and Daniel Verrastro each drove in a pair of runs, but a late comeback from the visiting team sent the St. Lawrence University baseball team to a 9-6 loss to Plattsburgh State on Wednesday evening at Tom Fay Field.

St. Lawrence fell to 11-19 with the loss, while the Cardinals improved to 9-17.

The Scarlet and Brown scored first in the game, putting up two runs in the second inning. After a leadoff pop-up, Verrastro singled his way aboard, stole second, and got pushed to third by a pair of walks. Owen McClintock and Siano went on to each walk with the bases loaded to plate two runs and take the lead.

Siano drove in his second run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nolan Widrick got the party started with a single through the right side and stole second to put himself in scoring position. McClintock then provided a bunt single to bring him to third base, where Siano earned a sacrifice fly to make it 3-0.

Plattsburgh scored its first run in the top of the fifth, but the Saints scored two more in the bottom of the fifth. Sean Desjardins and Gabe Albertson found their way aboard to start the innings and were followed by John Gannon, who smoked a double to center field to score Desjardins. Verrastro then came to the dish and pushed Albertson home with a sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.

The Cardinals continued their momentum, plating two more runs in the top of the sixth, and after another run for the Saints to make it 6-3, Plattsburgh mounted a furious comeback in the top of the eighth. Five singles and three walks helped power a six-run inning that made the score 9-6.

St. Lawrence threatened in the bottom of the eighth and ninth innings but couldn't gain any ground on a comeback effort.

The Saints saw 10 pitchers take the hill with Joshua Polumbo, Brendan Young, Sam Fosberg, Shota Kubota, John Igoe, and James Morr all pitching an inning. Owen Gray, Noah Spaulding, and JJ Humenay each got out for less than an inning, while Timothy Connor pitched the final 1.2 to close the contest.

St. Lawrence will turn their eyes to the weekend and their pivotal series against Clarkson starting Friday at 3 p.m. at Tom Fay Field.
