Sofia Berryhill threw a complete game victory,
Allison Kloft had five hits over two games, and five other Saints had multi-hit games as the St. Lawrence University softball team played to a split of their games against Southern Maine and Bates on Wednesday.
They beat Southern Maine in a low-scoring affair 2-1, and dropped the second game of the day in a tightly contested affair 6-3 later in the day.
"We're proud of how we played today," said Saints head coach
Rosie Phillips. "We pulled off a close win in game one and faced strong pitching in game two. We're starting to make earlier adjustments in the box and string together base hits, but we continue to struggle to push runs across with runners in scoring position and perform in high leverage situations. We're looking forward to competing tomorrow as we finish up our trip."
Game 1: St. Lawrence 2, Southern Maine 1
The game's only runs came in the first inning, and St. Lawrence got on the board first in the top half of the opening frame.
Emily Wendt reached on a fielder's choice with one out, then immediately stole second. Southern Maine's catcher then overthrew second base, allowing Wendt to trot into third. The centerfielder backed up the errant throw from the catcher, and herself overthrew third base allowing Wendt to score on back-to-back USM defensive miscues.
Later in the inning, with runners on the corners and one out,
Stella VanGee smacked a ball back to the pitcher, and Kloft scored from third on the play to make it 2-0 Saints. That ultimately stood as the game's winning run.
Southern Maine answered with a solo shot to left center off Saints starting pitcher
Sofia Berryhill in the bottom of the first, but that was the only blemish on Berryhill's line for the day. She proceeded to shut down the Huskies' lineup for the remainder of her complete-game outing. Neither team would score a run from that point on, and St. Lawrence hung on for the 2-1 victory.
Kloft led the way offensively in game one, going 3-for-4.
Emily Siansky went 2-for-2 in her first start of 2025 behind the dish. VanGee had the game's only RBI for the Scarlet and Brown.
In the circle, Berryhill went seven full innings, allowing five hits, one earned run, two walks while striking out four.
Game 2: Bates 6, St. Lawrence 3
Bates starting pitcher Dela Rankin hadn't allowed a run all spring coming into the game, and St. Lawrence put an end to that streak in the bottom of the first inning. Two singles from Vivian Johson and Kloft put runners on first and second, then
Madison Connelly made it 1-0 with a line-drive knock back up the middle to score Johnson.
The score remained 1-0 until the third, strung some runs together. They had three straight singles in the third followed by a sac fly and made the score 3-1. Bates added a fourth run in the fifth inning on an RBI double.
St. Lawrence were able to get their offense rolling against Rankin again in the sixth. They jammed up the bases with nobody out after back-to-back singles from substitutions
Layne Fritz and
Abby Gallas, then
Leah VerSchneider was hit by a pitch to load up the bases.
Caelen Jahnle reached on a fielder's choice where Bates flipped the ball to home for the out. Then
Vivian Johnson connected with an extra-base hit to score two runs.
Caelen Jahnle then rounded third, but was thrown out at the plate to end the inning and the score remained at 4-3.
Bates added two more runs later in the game for the 6-3 victory.
