Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

No. 7 Saints Advance to ECAC Semifinals, Defeat Yale in Game Two to Complete Quarterfinal Sweep

Abby Hustler tallied a pair of goals, while Kristina Bahl recorded the game winner, to lead the No. 7 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team to a 4-3 win over Yale in game two of the ECAC Quarterfinals, to compete the weekend sweep and move on to the ECAC Championship weekend.

St. Lawrence improved to 21-10-5 on the season, while Yale fell to 16-13-3 and with the loss.

To get things started for the Saints, Kennedy Wilson helped turn the puck over at the Saints' blue line and Hustler did the rest, sneaking one past Yale netminder Pia Dukaric with the backhanded shot for her 16th goal of the season and the 1-0 lead. Saints' goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström also assisted on the action.

After the first period of play, the Saints held onto their one goal lead and a 17-5 advantage in shots on goal.

Yale bounced back to start the second, scoring nearly two minutes apart to take over with a 2-1 lead on goals from Avery Peters and Carina DiAntonio.

St. Lawrence also rebounded well putting their next two in the back of the net to regain control with a 3-2 lead.

Wilson picked up the first as she beat Dukaric from the right circle, while Hustler scored her second of the game as she pumped the breaks and sniped a shot to the top left corner. Sarah Marchand and Bella Parento assisted on Wilson's goal, while Katina Duscio added the helper for Hustler.

After two periods of play, SLU led 3-2 on the scoreboard and 22-10 in shots on goal.

Just four minutes into the third, Bahl tipped a shot from Hillary Sterling that went low to give the Saints an insurance goal, but the back-and-forth action continued as Yale's Olivia Muhn scored on the power play to bring the game back within one.

The Saints fought off the extra attacker and a flurry of shots for the final 2:28 of the third to seal the quarterfinal sweep and the 4-3 win in regulation.

"Great effort by our team today," said head coach Chris Wells. "We played some of our best hockey this weekend and we needed to."

"Everyone was doing everything they could to win this series. A couple real good bounces and some great efforts were big reasons for us being able to move on. It's incredibly hard to make our league final four and we are very happy to be moving on. This team deserves it!"

Nordström made 12 saves for the Saints, while Dukaric stopped 28 for Yale.

The Saints finished with a 32-15 advantage in shots on goal and blocked 19 shots, as the total shot count was 46-45 in favor of SLU. Yale notched one power play goal going 1-for-2.

St. Lawrence advances to the ECAC Semifinals for the second consecutive season and with two quarterfinal series still in action, the Saints will await their opponent. Championship weekend will be hosted by Cornell University.

"A special thank you to all our fans who came out to Appleton this season to support us," Wells added. "We always hear you! Thank you!"
