The Saints got 28 saves from graduate student netminder
Dominic Basse in net, but the St. Lawrence University men's hockey couldn't find the net in a 4-0 loss to No. 13 Quinnipiac on Saturday night in Appleton Arena.
St. Lawrence fell to 9-23-2 on the year to close out the regular season and 5-15-2 in ECAC play, while the Bobcats improved to 22-10-2 overall and 16-5-1 in league action.
Before the contest, the St. Lawrence University men's hockey honored the Class of 2025 as part of its Senior Day festivities. Among those honored were graduate students
Reilly Connors, and Basse along with seniors
Mason Waite,
Oak Macleod,
Philippe Chapleau,
Will Arquiett,
Greg Lapointe,
Drake Burgin, and
Ty Naaykens.
Quinnipiac, who was in search of their fifth-straight regular season title, opened the game on the right foot pressuring the Saints net early. The Scarlet and Brown were able to regain some momentum after an initial push and got chances from
Cayden Casey,
Tyler Cristall,
Jake Lammens, and
Isaac Tremblay in the opening six minutes, but were unable to find twine.
Instead, it was the Bobcats, who struck first with a goal from Jeremy Wilmer at 6:39 to make it 1-0. Quinnipiac was aided by a power play later in the period, but it was killed off and the game went into the break at 1-0.
St. Lawrence was on the power play to start the second thanks to a Bobcat penalty at the end of the first. The Saints were unable to get much pressure but had some good looks after the man-advantage that threatened Matej Marinov.
The Bobcats once again flipped the momentum in their favor with another goal from Wilmer at 6:25 to make it 2-0.
The Scarlet and Brown then went on another kill minutes later which turned into a 5-on-3 for the Bobcats. St. Lawrence killed off the threat and was flagged for another infraction shortly after. After killing yet another penalty, the team went on a power play with 1:34 left in the second but the score was 2-0 at intermission.
Play would eventually return to 5-on-5 early in the third, but Quinnipiac gained a three-goal lead at the 6:45 mark with a goal from Tyler Borgula and made it a 4-0 game at 11:18 with a goal from Andon Cerbone.
St. Lawrence had some chances down the stretch, including a shot from
Will Arquiett which found the crossbar, but they were unable to break up the shutout.
Basse made 28 saves in the effort, while Marinov stopped 19. The Saints' penalty kill went 5-for-5 on the day but only had two chances on the power play going 0-for-2.
With the regular season in the rearview, the Skating Saints will head to the road next Saturday for the Opening Round of the ECAC Hockey Championships. The team will head to Hanover, N.H. to take on Dartmouth in a winner-take-all game with the ECAC Quarterfinals on the line.
