Men's Squash Defeats Bard and Haverford to Reach LL Title Game

The St. Lawrence University men's squash team took a pair of wins against Bard and Haverford on day one of the Liberty League Championships at the Robie Squash Center to advance to Sunday's Championship match.

Match 1: St. Lawrence 6, Bard 1

In the day's opening match, the Saints nearly swept the Raptors taking a 6-1 victory.

At number two, Dmitry Stepanenko took on Miguel Rodriguez on the Dordelman Championship Court and won 11-8, 11-1, 11-6. In the third spot, Henry Worden also played on the glass court and took an 11-1, 11-3, 11-4 win to secure victory.

Coby Galarza faced off against Faisal Jones at four and won 11-4, 11-3, 11-2, while his classmate Andrey Bakulev took an 11-3, 11-3, 11-1 win against Joas Erasmus at five.

At the bottom of the order, first-years Gunnar Tebo and Braden Chastanet each took 3-0 wins with Tebo winning 11-1, 11-0, 11-4 at six, and Chastanet winning 11-5, 11-2, 11-0 in the seventh spot.

At number one, Alix du Plessis put together a spirited effort but fell in three games on the Championship Court.

Match 2: St. Lawrence 9, Haverford 0

St. Lawrence took the sweep in the second match of the day winning 9-0 in their matchup against Haverford.

At one, Gregory Malsang made quick work of his match taking an 11-1, 11-1, 11-4 win over Noah Tunis. At two, Patrick Walford took on Aaryaman Jaising and after falling in the second game, came back to win the final two games 11-4 and 11-6 to take the 3-1 win. Oliver Bikhazi-Green occupied the three spot and took the victory 11-4, 11-5, 11-4 against Kai Thomas Schinaman.

The four through seven spots also produced sweeps with Hassan Madkour, Miguel Posada Villa, Harry Robson, and Athrva Yadav taking victories.

At eight, Gavin Cassidy dropped his first game 11-8 against Garret Fantini, but took the next three 11-4, 11-7, 11-3 for the win. Trey Denman played at number nine and took a 2-0 lead over Arvin Krishnan before dropping the next two. In the winner-take-all game, Denman won 11-9 to complete the sweep.

The Scarlet and Brown will line up against Rochester for the Liberty League title tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in the Robie Squash Center and the Dordelman Championship Court.
