Dan Anderson and
Adam Dudzinski had 19 and 15 points respectively, but the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team fell 71-60 against the Hobart Statesmen in a 2024 Liberty League championship game rematch on Saturday night in Burkman Gymnasium.
The Saints fall to 12-8 overall with a 6-8 record in the Liberty League.
The St. Lawrence offense was strong in the first four minutes of the game and a three pointer by Aiden Macaulay with 16:37 to go in the first half gave the Scarlet and Brown an early 9-4 advantage.
However, the Statesmen held the Saints in check defensively for the next few minutes, eventually taking their first lead eight minutes in and going up by six, 26-20 with four minutes remaining.
Aidan Macaulay, Anderson, and Dudzinski all scored in the final minutes of the half, but the Saints found themselves facing their largest deficit of the game at halftime as Hobart controlled a 33-26 lead.
The Statesmen continued to roll in the beginning of the second half and got out in front 44-34 with 13 minutes remaining. The Saints finally strung a run together a minute later, getting stops defensively and scoring eight unanswered points with five from Dudzinski and three from Anderson to trim the game to 46-44 with under 11 minutes left.
Despite this, in a very similar fashion to last night's game versus RIT, Hobart was able to gain the momentum back by scoring the next 11 points, getting back their double-digit lead with seven minutes left.
Down 15 in desperation time late, the Saints amped up the pressure and it worked beautifully for a time, as the Statesmen had several live-ball backcourt turnovers that led to St. Lawrence layups on the other end. Over the next five minutes, the Saints went on a 10-1 run and a steal followed by a layup from
Troy McPherson cut the lead to 62-56 with just over two minutes left.
Despite the best efforts from the Saints, the Statesmen were able to score on their next possession and the Saints couldn't capitalize late, leading to their 11-point defeat.
Dudzinski paced the Saints with seven rebounds.
Aidan Macaulay had seven points and a team-high four assists, while
Gavin Macaulay also chipped in with seven points while adding three helpers. Anderson had five steals on the day.
The Saints beat the Statesmen in field goal percentage, shooting 39 per cent while Hobart shot 35. However, the Statesmen had 19 assists on their 24 made field goals. They also out-rebounded St. Lawrence 41-27.
The Saints head into their final home weekend of the regular season next week as they begin the weekend welcoming Ithaca to Canton, N.Y. on Friday, February 14.
