Dan Anderson had 12 points and
Trey Syroka had 11, but the No. 6-seeded St. Lawrence University men's basketball team fell 62-42 to the No. 2-seeded Ithaca Bombers in the Liberty League Semifinals Friday night in Ithaca, N.Y.
The loss puts an end to the Saints' 2024-25 campaign as they finish with an overall record of 16-10.
"Ithaca played a really strong defensive game, and that prevented us from being able to put together a scoring run or get a lot of shots to fall," said Saints head coach
Chris Downs. "While our season ends today, this group of seniors has a lot to be proud of. They've set the bar at a good place for the team moving into future years, and we are excited to see what lies ahead for us as a group."
St. Lawrence trailed early, down 14-5 eight minutes into the game. With five minutes left in the half, the Saints got back-to-back buckets with a three from
Aidan Macaulay followed by a layup from Syroka, to get the Bombers lead down to 19-15.
However, this was the closest the Saints got in the first 20 minutes, and Ithaca scored eight of the final 10 points of the half to lead 27-17 at the break. Anderson led the Saints at the half with six points with
Aidan Macaulay right behind.
The St. Lawrence defense helped them keep pace for the first few minutes of the second half, but eventually, Ithaca went on an 11-2 scoring run and with 13:26 left in the game, the Saints found themselves down 40-24.
St. Lawrence pushed back and a little while later,
Gavin Macaulay drilled a three to get the Bombers advantage to under 10 for the first time since early in the second half, with the score now showing 45-37 with six minutes remaining. Ithaca however, quickly got the lead back up to double digits and the Saints couldn't convert on the other end of the court, eventually falling by 20.
This marks the first time since the 2021-22 season that St. Lawrence will not be playing in the Liberty League Championship.
Syroka finished the night with three rebounds and two assists in addition to his 11 points off the bench to end his five-year career with the Saints. Both Gavin and
Aidan Macaulay finished their tenures with five-point outings, while
Andrew Cowan recorded two points, seven rebounds, and three blocks in his final game.
