The home team scored two goals 29 seconds apart in the first period and never looked back as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 6-0 to Cornell on Saturday night at Lynah Rink in Ithaca, N.Y.
St. Lawrence fell to 9-21-2 with the loss, and 5-13-2 in ECAC play, while the Big Red improved to 12-9-6 and 9-7-4 in the league.
The game got off to a strong start with both teams playing well in their structure for the first seven minutes or so. Things started to break open a bit though as
Mason Kucenski was tasked with a pair of difficult saves to keep Cornell off the board.
Following the first-period TV timeout, Cornell broke through with a goal at 13:12 when Jack O'Leary picked up a loose puck and found the back of the net. The home team doubled up the score 29 seconds later with a Dalton Bancroft tally forcing the Saints to use a timeout.
St. Lawrence gained some traction following the break with a strong shift and a great look from senior captain
Drake Burgin but the momentum was short-lived as St. Lawrence went to the box. The Saints killed off the chance and once again nearly scored when
Felikss Gavars found open space with 1:58 to go. Instead, they were flagged for another penalty that ran through into the intermission.
The Scarlet and Brown once again finished off a kill with 46 seconds of man-down time to start the second. In what was a recurring theme,
Tyler Cristall followed the chance with a near goal that was followed by infractions. The Saints killed off the third chance only to go back man-down when they were assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct.
St. Lawrence was able to kill the whole five-minute major, but the mounting pressure against them caved in when Sullivan Mack cashed in following the TV timeout. Cornell went on their fifth power play to the Saints' none at the 124:24 mark of the second and finally scored on the man advantage to make it 4-4.
The officials finally flagged Cornell for a penalty to close the middle frame, but the Saints were unable to get a goal on the board.
In the third period, the Big Red looked to have scored their fifth goal of the game five minutes in but a review for goalie interference called the goal back. They would get their fifth and sixth goals late in the game to further salt it away.
Kucenski made 25 saves in the visiting goal, while Shane stopped 13. Cornell went 1-for-5 on the man advantage, while the Saints were afforded just one chance and went 0-for-1.
The Saints will head home and begin preparing for their final games of the regular season next weekend. The Scarlet and Brown will host Princeton on Friday before celebrating Senior Night against Quinnipiac on Saturday.
