Twahili Scores 15, Saints Fall to Rensselaer in Final Regular Season Game

Alexi Twahili had a career-high 15 points with five threes but Rensselaer's used strong first-half shooting to down the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team 72-49 Saturday in Troy, N.Y.

The Saints wrap up the regular season with a 15-9 overall record and a 9-9 mark in conference play. The Saints clinched their spot in the playoffs yesterday after beating Skidmore and will now be the six seed in the Liberty League Tournament.

RPI came ready to play. Just five minutes into the game, the Engineers had 10 points on the board and the Saints hadn't scored yet. Trey Syroka and Chris Downs Jr. both scored in the next few minutes, but the Engineers couldn't miss on the other end, going up 29-9 with 7:24 left in the half.

Nothing went the way of the Saints the rest of the first stanza, and after a 7-0 run from RPI to conclude the half, the Engineers controlled a 42-14 lead after shooting 56 per cent and 9-for-15 from three. Twahili and Charlie VonOehsen both had three points to lead St. Lawrence at the half.

Improved offense from the Scarlet and Brown led to evenly played basketball for the early part of the second half.

With 14:18 left in the game, the Saints put together a 11-4 run and got the game to 56-32 with 10 minutes left. However, St. Lawrence couldn't get another run going and failed to get the game within twenty the rest of the way, eventually falling by 23.

Twahili had 12 of his 15 in the second half and Downs Jr. had eight points. The Engineers ended the game shooting 51 per cent and making 13 shots from three.

The Saints will be in playoff action next as they will face the third-seeded Vassar Brewers in Poughkeepsie on Tuesday night. The Saints split with the Brewers on the season series, winning by 25 in their home matchup and falling by one on the road.
