Aidan Macaulay,
Gavin Macaulay, and
Trey Syroka all scored in double-figures on their Senior Day and the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team ran the Union Garnet Chargers out of the gym with a 74-50 victory in their final home game of the season.
The Saints sweep the weekend doubleheader and move to 14-8 overall with an even 8-8 record in Liberty League play. St. Lawrence leapfrogs Clarkson for that final Liberty League playoff spot in sixth place after the Golden Knights dropped both their contests this weekend. The Saints have a one-game lead over both Clarkson and Bard, owning the tiebreaker over Bard but not against Clarkson should it come down to a tie in the standings.Â
"We played well defensively and it's important we build on momentum this week at practice," said Saints head coach
Chris Downs.
Joining the Macaulays and Syroka for Senior Day were
Andrew Cowan,
Tate Kuiper and
Jack Wirtanen. They were honored with a pre-game ceremony, where their parents joined them on-court.
After Union led 4-3 early, the Saints turned up the pressure and went on a 15-0 run in the next four minutes. Six different players scored in this span and the defense forced the Garnet Chargers into seven turnovers, resulting in an 18-4 lead just over six minutes after tipoff.
The Saints defense continued to hold the Garnet Chargers in check for the remainder of the half, which allowed the Scarlet and Brown to expand their lead even more. A layup by
Chris Downs Jr. gave St. Lawrence a 27-12 lead with six minutes remaining in the half and at halftime, the Saints found themselves leading 37-18. At halftime, Union was held to 25 per cent from the floor and 0-for-11 from the three point arc.Â
It only took the Saints 20 seconds to get their lead up to 20 points after a layup by
Aidan Macaulay on their first possession of the half. Even though Union was able to get more shots to fall in the half, the Saints didn't allow any runs and continued to excel on both ends to retain the momentum as their lead swelled even more. Syroka made a free throw with six minutes left in the game to bring the game to 68-38, which turned out to be the Saints' largest lead of the game. The Saints went on to win 74-50 a few minutes later, earning their second-largest margin of victory for the season.
Â
Aidan Macaulay led St. Lawrence with 15 points,
Dan Anderson was right behind him with 14,
Gavin Macaulay had 11 and Syroka added 10. Syroka also led the Saints with five assists and four steals coming off the bench.
Jack Wirtanen also scored two points on his senior night. The Saints shot 46 per cent for the day while the Garnet Chargers were at 32 per cent. St. Lawrence also beat Union 25-11 on points off turnovers and had 20 assists on 29 made field goals.Â
The Saints will look to solidify their spot in the postseason as they have two games remaining on the schedule, against the first-place RPI Engineers on Friday, February 21 and the last-place Skidmore Thoroughbreds on Saturday. The Scarlet and Brown can finish as high as fourth in the standings or miss the postseason pending results next weekend around the league.Â
