Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Hustler Ties Game; No. 4 Raiders Claim Overtime Win Over No. 7 Saints

Abby Hustler scored in the third period to send the game to overtime, but the fourth-ranked Colgate Raiders scored just 28 seconds into the extra frame to claim a 3-2 win over the seventh-ranked St. Lawrence University women's hockey team on Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y.

Back-and-forth play from the start with not much offense on either side of the puck seemed to make up the majority of the first frame.

With 4:27 to play in the first, the Saints struck first with a goal from captain Anna Segedi.

Hillary Sterling carried the puck down the boards and into the Colgate zone and passed off to Taylor Lum, whose backhanded shot was turned away by Hannah Murphy, but the rebound sent straight to the stick of Segedi for the first of the game.

With the Raiders on the power play, Colgate set up a tic-tac-toe passing play, allowing Emma Pais to tie things up with a one timer from the slot.

After the first 20 minutes, the game remained knotted 1-1 and shots on goal were evened up at seven apiece.

Early in the second period, Sara Stewart put the Raiders up 2-1, scoring on Colgate's second power-play opportunity of the game.

With 7:22 to play in the second, Saints goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordström stopped back-to-back shots from Pais to keep the Raiders from finding another goal, which allowed Sarah Thompson to make a rush down the left side nearly beating Murphy for the equalizer.

After two periods, Colgate led 2-1 on the scoreboard and 18-16 in shots on goal.

At 13:12 of the third the Saints found the equalizer that they had been searching for.

Segedi dished the puck up to Abby Hustler just before the Saints' blue line, Hustler carried the puck through the neutral zone and beat the Raiders defender and went top corner beating the glove of Murphy to tie things up 2-2. Hustler's goal was her 149th career point.

The Saints pinned the Raiders in their own zone for the good majority of the final five minutes of the third, but the game stayed 2-2 for the eventual overtime.

Colgate claimed the win just 28 seconds into overtime, as Elyssa Biederman stripped the puck and lifted the puck over Nordström's glove for the 3-2 win.

"That was a big bounce back for our group today," said head coach Chris Wells. "We came back well from the game in Ithaca last night and found a way to get a point with the goal in the third. It's not easy to win in this league on the road let alone come back in the third. Our third period was as good as we've played in a while and it was good to see."

"I've never been a fan of the 3x3 overtime," Wells added. "We have been on the right side of it and the wrong side. We can take a lot out of tonight's game moving forward with Quinnipiac and Princeton coming to town."

Nordström finished with 25 saves for SLU, while Murphy stopped 30 for Colgate.

The Saints finished with a 32-28 edge in shots on goal, while Colgate went 2-for-3 on the power play. SLU moved to 16-9-5 on the season and 10-5-3 in conference play, while Colgate moved to 24-6-0 and 15-3-0, respectively.

St. Lawrence will return to Appleton Arena for its final home weekend of the regular season. The Saints will honor their graduate students on Friday vs. Quinnipiac and the five members of the Class of 2025 vs. Princeton on Saturday.
