Despite a game-high 26 points from junior
Dan Anderson, it was not enough as the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team fell to Vassar 66-65 one-point game Saturday afternoon at Vassar in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
"Overall, it was a good weekend. However, we are disappointed with the loss," said Saints head coach Chris Downs. "Our late-game execution has cost us two road games where we played well enough to win. That poor execution is squarely on me. I haven't had them do enough situational basketball in our practices. We will address this week and be better moving forward."
In the first half, the Saints came out strong going on an 11-1 run being capped off with a layup from sophomore
Troy McPherson.
Vassar was able to bounce back and tie the game at 15, and the rest of the half was back and forth. The Saints were able gain the edge right before the end of the half, when Anderson hit a three to put them up by four, giving them a 26-22 to lead going into halftime.
The Saints came out strong once again for the second half, going up 37-24 after an and-one layup plus the free throw from senior
Gavin Macaulay.
Just like the first half, Vassar began to fight back and brought the game back to within four points. The game was back and forth with multiple lead changes down the stretch. With 1:53 left, graduate student
Trey Syroka hit two free throws to put St. Lawrence up 65-63.
Luke Adams from Vassar hit a three 20 seconds later to give his team the lead by one. The Saints were unable to answer back as the rest of the game remained scoreless, resulting in the 66-65 win for Vassar.
Along the Anderson leading the way in scoring, junior
Adam Dudzinski put 15 points for the Saints. Senior
Andrew Cowan led the team in rebounds with eight.
The Saints edged Vassar in shooting from the field with 50 per cent compared to 47.1 per cent, yet Vassar had the edge in three-point shooting going 7-8 compared to the Saint's 6-12.
The Saints are back in action next Friday night when they take on RIT back at home in Canton, N.Y.
