Jan Lasak scored in the second period for the Saints, but a six-goal second period from Vermont put the game out of reach as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey team fell 8-1 to the University of Vermont on Saturday night in Burlington, Vt.
St. Lawrence fell to 5-12-1 on the year with the loss, while the Catamounts improved to 8-8-3.
St. Lawrence started the contest with some early pressure on goal in the first two minutes, but the Catamounts cashed in to start the game. Will Zapernick was able to thread his shot through a screen and in to take the 1-0 advantage.
The Saints countered with some great chances in the following minutes.
Felikss Gavars had the first good chance screaming down the left wing and getting a shot on Axel Mangbo that was stymied.
Tyler Cristall was likewise in attack mode with a pair of chances before first-year
Spencer Bell threatened ahead of the television timeout.
Vermont would be afforded a power play chance with a penalty call at the timeout, but St. Lawrence's penalty kill stood tall allowing just one shot in the effort.
In the following minutes, the Catamounts struck at even strength when a bad bounce found the stick of Jens Richards, who doubled their lead.
Jacob Bernadet, the local product of South Burlington, Vt., nearly thrilled his local fanbase with a point-blank shot in the waning minutes but Mangbo came through with a tremendous save. Gavars followed the chance at the buzzer with a break on goal but his shot was denied to keep the game at 2-0 at the break.
Vermont once again struck early with Colin Kessler scoring just 53 seconds into the second period of action. Cristall and
Isack Bandu responded with some pressure, but it wasn't until the 2:41 mark when the Saints got on the board. Lasak carried the puck into the Catamount zone and took the puck around the net. The junior came out the other side and ripped a wrist shot home to make it 3-1.
The Catamounts regained their three-goal lead at the 5:50 mark of the period then erupted for four more goals in the final six minutes of the period to go up 8-1 at the intermission.
Neither team would find the net in the third period as the game went to an 8-1 final.
Mason Kucenski stopped 16 shots in 36:28 of action while
Dominic Basse made nine saves in 23:32 of play. Mangbo finished with 18 saves in the Catamount win.
The Skating Saints will be back in action next weekend when the team hosts RPI and Union at Appleton Arena.
