Troy McPherson had 13 points off the bench and three other Saints scored in double figures as the St. Lawrence University men's basketball team pulled off a 58-52 road victory over the Hobart Statesmen Friday night at Bristol Gym in Geneva, N.Y.
The Saints improved to 10-5 on the season and are now 4-5 in the Liberty League as they continue their push for a Liberty League playoff spot.
"That was a good bounce-back win tonight against a really great team," said Saints head coach
Chris Downs. "The defense was had to be locked in to contain that group, and they were. Rebounding was also very good. Now we turn our attention to Saturday, which is a big game for us against RIT."
The Saints began the game as well as they could have hoped -- putting down an 11-0 run to kick off the game.
Adam Dudzinski had five of those points.
The Statesmen struggled to solve the Saints' zone and didn't score until the 12:19 mark of the first half. Hobart was able to get going in the latter part of the half, but the Saints matched them until late. St. Lawrence held a 27-14 lead, and with three minutes remaining, the Statesmen scored the final six points of the half and the Saints lead was 27-20 at halftime.
Aidan Macaulay led the way with nine points.
St. Lawrence initially was in trouble to begin the second half as Hobart got the game down to 33-31 a third of the way through. They proceeded to tie the game at 36 with 12 minutes left. A few minutes later though,
Troy McPherson and
Dan Anderson quieted the crowd with five and three points respectively as the Saints went on an 8-0 run to take a 48-38 lead with just under four minutes to play. Hobart was able to get some late buckets, but the Saints relied on their foul shooting to lead them to the 58-52 win.
Dudzinski, and both Aidan and
Gavin Macaulay all scored in double digits with 11, 11, and 10 respectively. Dudzinski also led St. Lawrence with three steals and nine rebounds and
Andrew Cowan was right behind, grabbing eight boards.
The Saints will look to get another road win as they take on the RIT Tigers Saturday, January 25 in Rochester. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.
