Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Cristall and Thoreson Score in Close 3-2 Loss at Brown

Tyler Cristall and Gunnar Thoreson each scored for the Saints, but a pair of video reviews in the third period tiled the scales in favor of the home team as the St. Lawrence University men's hockey dropped a close 3-2 game against Brown on Friday night in the Meehan Auditorium in Providence, R.I.

The Saints fell to 6-14-1 on the year and 2-6-1 in ECAC play, while the Bears improved to 5-9-2 and 3-7-1 in league action.

The Bears had the advantageto start the game getting a pair of great chances on goal, but were stymied by Mason Kucenski, who was sharp early.

St. Lawrence countered and made it a 1-0 game just 3:44 into the game.

An opposing defender chipped the puck out of the Bears' end after some sustained Saints pressure and the puck fell on the stick of Isaac Tremblay. The first-year carried the puck from his end into the offensive zone and around the goal. Tremblay found Cristall in front of the net and the junior did the rest to give the Scarlet and Brown the lead.

St. Lawrence continued to press with chances from Tremblay and his linemate Felikss Gavars and the pressure led to a power play. The chance was killed but as the clock hit zero on the penalty, senior captain Drake Burgin wired a shot just over the corner of the Brown goal.

Brown would also go on the man-advantage in the period but couldn't find much traction. It wasn't until the final minute that Max Scott made a jump on the Saints' defense and was bearing down on goal. Reilly Connors knocked the forward off the puck but Scott drew a penalty that sent him to center ice for a penalty shot. The captain snapped a shot in to make the game 1-1 at the break.

The line of Cristall, Tremblay, and Gavars stayed hot to start the second period creating some chances early. The momentum permeated through the lineup as Greg Lapointe nearly missed a chance in front.

Following some extended pressure the Saints regained the lead when a rebound from a Jan Olenginski bid found Thoreson. The forward took the puck below the goal line and fired a shot off the back of the head of Lawton Zacher and in.

Cristall had a chance to extend the lead by walking through the entirety of the Bears' defense, but instead, it was Brown who would tie the game. Much like Scott, Brendan Clark got a step on a defender and saw his effort barely trickle over the line to tie the game.

The game cruised into the third period where the Saints would carry the action. Their pressure looked to have paid off midway through the period when it appeared a Gabe Westling shot crossed the goal line. After a lengthy review, the goal was called off and the game remained at 2-2.

The pendulum swung the other way moments later when a Ryan St. Louis shot was just as close on the other end. After yet another lengthy review, that bid was called good and Brown took a 3-2 lead.

St. Lawrence pulled their goaltender with 3:14 to go and applied heavy pressure. Despite their best efforts, the puck didn't find twine and the clock hit zeroes.

Kucenski finished with 22 saves for the Saints, while Zacher came up with 26 stops, including 16 in the third period alone.

Both teams came up empty on the power play in the game, and the Saints held a 28-25 shot advantage.

The Skating Saints will be back in action tomorrow when the team travels to New Haven, Conn. to take on Yale.
