Jackson Brinker,
Timothy Connor, and
John Gannon all produced an RBI on the day. However, the St. Lawrence University Baseball team ultimately lost 7-4 against the Hobart Statesman on Saturday at Falcon Park in Auburn, N.Y.
With the loss, the Saints moved to 6-11 on the season and 1-6 in Liberty League play. The Statesmen improved to 7-11 and 2-4 in the conference.
Brinker and
Brett Federico each had two hits on the day, and each scorched a double off the Statesmen arms.
Boden Driscoll pitched five strong innings of one-run ball in relief and
Joshua Polumbo followed him up with a shutout inning of his own.
Hobart started the game with a three-run first inning, doing a lot of damage with two outs. A leadoff single, steal of second base, groundout, and a sacrifice fly led to the first run of the game. The Statesmen followed this up with a walk and three singles, plating two more to make the game 3-0 after one.
Hobart doubled their lead in the second, getting a single, walk, and three-run home run to grab a 6-0 lead, doing all the damage with two outs once again.
The Saints threatened for the first time in the third. The Statesmen got two quick outs defensively before Brinker, Federico, and Connor drew three straight walks, leading to a bases-loaded opportunity. Unfortunately, the Scarlet and Brown were unable to convert, as a fielder's choice groundout left three Saints on base.
The Saints trailed 7-0 going into the fifth inning, but finally got the bats going. Brinker singled, Federico doubled, and Connor drove home Brinker with a single to hop on the board then
John Gannon hit a sac fly to center field to give the Saints two runs in the inning.
The Saints broke out the bats once again in the sixth, adding a couple more runs.
Willie Landman singled,
Sean Desjardins drew a walk, then a fielder's choice by
Stephen Colangelo put runners on the corners with two outs. A wild pitch followed by a double from Brinker scored two, reducing the Hobart lead to 7-4.
Driscoll came in from the bullpen for St. Lawrence in the third and pitched his way into the seventh. The first-year hurler gave up just one earned run in the third and never surrendered a hit in the four innings after that. He ended with five innings pitched, one hit, and struck out three Statesmen.
Polumbo came in to pitch in relief of Driscoll and threw a scoreless eighth inning, freezing two batters with a couple of looking strikeouts.
In the ninth, the Saints got rolling with a Brinker walk, and another walk by Federico put two on with nobody out. The next batter, Connor, hit a sharp line drive into center field that was caught. As the runners took off with the crack of the bat, Hobart got an 8-3-6 triple play to conclude the game.
The Saints will look ahead to two more games against Hobart in a twin-bill tomorrow versus the Statesmen with the games being played on the campus of Finger Lakes Community College.
